• WizardOfOz: Because both the TIA and RIOT RAM reside in the zero page (mirrored to page one). Without clearing the stack, graphics, sound and RAM would start in an unknown state. Remember that this machine only has half a page of RAM :)

  Kylearan: Yeah, I think Stella is emulating the PF2 latching incorrectly. I think writes to PFx apply only to the next time they are drawn, but I haven't verified that yet
