303 if you please

whynot2000: When you reconstruct a sampled signal (i.e. convert it back to an actual analog waveform) you normally don't use a "sample-and-hold" approach like you have in your example, you interpolate with a sinc-function instead. That way you can make an *exact* reconstruction of the original signal (theortically at least, in reality you don't have ideal lowpass filters etc)
Using sample-and-hold would add a lot of funky distortions...

(sampled at 10hz -> this should be 20hz of course, the nyquist is 10hz)

hmm, so the DAC really does interpollate it. but we do agree that when it didn't (like the 1bit speaker in your computer) you'd get a squarewave with that array, right?
and a 9hz wave would be distorted with subharmonics, and that this is analoguous (but not that drastic) with a 23.5kHz wave at 44kHz.
Edit for above post from me: I think "interpolation" is not the correct word, should have written "convolution" instead.

okay, i think it's about as clear is it gets for me now, thanks ;)
Ok listen you guys, as long as your dac can produce the BASS we need not worry

You guys convinced me. I am a troll. Whether I intended to or not, I completely derailed this thread. For that I apologize.

Your question about the Accent actually renders this entire thread useless.

hei, they told me you like sampling, so i put a shannon in your nyquist so you can sample while you synthesize!

i think ill copy this music code and make a demo about it :)

I suppose if you like. It's not done, there's no tone control, accents or sliding. but ok

well, rebirth is ok, but nowhere near the real thing. :D

What elitist rubbish. :) ReBirth has very, very good 303 emulation, and in a finished mix, I dare you or anyone else to tell the difference from that and something from a real TB-303.

I should add that I have owned two TB-303's (still have one), and also ReBirth.

gloom, it certainly depends on what you use the 303-sounds for.. to me this is like claiming it is impossible to taste the difference between cheap cola and the real thing (coca cola).

Wonder why Roland doesn't make something like Korg's Legacy Collection VSTis...

bstrr: of course, but in general use, saying that ReBirth is "nowhere near" a real TB-303 is simply not correct. You can find certain patterns and usecases where it is possible to distinguish them (by a trained ear), but for the most part, that is not the case.

gloom: yeah ok, I'll agree with you there - I just recall when the Acid Flash 10 compilation was released and it featured Rebirth on the cover and a lot of tunes made with it.. my love for that series ended there :)

bstrr: fuck you! that was my analogy of the year!:p

rebirth is not as good as the real thing because it supports midi and has no noise when you record it!!!111!!1
unless you don't use rebirths attack and slide AND throw lots of distortion on it, it really can sound like the real thing.

same for a stickman scribble coming close to a picasso - if you close your enough. but hey, let's not split hair - shall we?

Software can be good enough. I've seen some wicked stuff go on with people who are into collecting the 'real-thing', people who spend $100 on a cable and crazy fanatic stuff because you know nothing can compare- right? At the end of the day all we're doing is moving a diaphragm back and forth and I rather go for how to do that cheaply

I said nothing about software in general - i was only talking about Rebirth.

hmm. ok, i see

whynot2k: oh sorry about that.. i'll have to do another to claim as my own..

saying that you can't hear the difference between Rebirth and a real TB-303 is like claiming you can't smell the difference inside the partyhall at BreakPoint before and after the danes takes their PANTS OFF!

Happy New Year!

:D
