I'm a lamer, I've never been to a demo party, I've never released something (although I've started some stuff) and never met a scener.

still I criticize on pouet :)

thom: Objective criticism is good, it's necessary and helps improving things for a subsequent prod.

However, bashing and criticism just for the sake of it is indeed lame. It's usually done by people who don't produce anything and have no idea how much work might have been involved.

sceners still don't think too highly of people like myself

Some people release stuff for money, but I can guarantee you that some people also still release stuff for people "like yourself", among other things.
People "like yourself" are an important part of what motivates us, whether you are a scener or not.

Scene has always been pretty elitist from the very beginning, but I can assure you that it still motivates us a lot to read cool comments about our productions from non demosceners on some anonymous blog/forum/whatever website.

Keops' comment makes me wonder: Is it possible to define what's a scener nowadays as the scene is easily accessible via the web? Anybody who finds out about pouet and identifies himself or herself with the scene may call himself or herself a scener. Why not? On the other hand, there are also lots of people releasing e.g. graphics or tracks who don't consider themselves sceners.

I think that several people who once discovered the demoscene (through the web or not, it doesn't matter) and decide that this community really fits their hobbies/creativity/personality/whatever, they get quite obsessed with to it and their first wish is to produce something for it too. Those are the ones who stay for a long time and eventually participate in the creative aspect of it.

The rest of the people might think "Mmm,. I didn't knew that such a community existed!" but they either have better things to do or never get so much attached to it, to learn it's people, it's ways, it's gossip, visit it's parties, spend their half life to contribute even a tiny bit.

The first people are just like me and all of you. Some are 1337s, other have produced several lame stuff but are still here and spending their life with something the tend to know well by the time, I believe this makes a scener. Even a single contribution and even 99% of Pouet people have produced something in their lifes for the scene, unlike the popular belief, and that's just imho. We feel and call ourself sceners because we are really dedicated into it, each one via his/her way.

The second kind of people are, e.g. friends of mine and yours, who might have watched some demos I've showed to them, have an idea about the scene because I told them, and some of them do appreciate our efforts. But they were never involved in a single demo production at all. Because they were never attracted so much to decide start learning and getting really into it for a year or more. I have some friends who maybe would like to get into it because it's interesting but they are more motivated by other activities in real life. Then they forget it. Those ones never considered themselfs as sceners :)

It's a matter of dedication, mild or extreme or any kind, it's being here or in a demoparty right now because you are sucked into it. And whoever gets sucked by the demoscene cannot escape. Har har har blah blah blah..

Gotta code now :P

this is outrageous!
Not being productive and just leeching is a bad thing. Commenting on productions at sites like pouet is even worse.. but starting a thread like this is to get some respect is utter bloody utter plain utter wrong!
bad bad BAD etc.. :)
