Is the term "demo" still valid?

Demo stands for demonstration of the abilities of the coder, and the other people involved in the making of the demo. But are you making demos only for showing off your abilities or are there any other reasons,too? If a demo isn't primarily made for showing off, but for other reasons (e.g. expressing a message), should it still be called a demo?
Let's call them EgoBoosters, because that's why we all do them. And to attract teenage grupies of course.
