Useless topic : the most insane amount of money you paid for a computer related thing during your scene years
category: general [glöplog]
I bought a falcon in 1994 to replace my old ST : about 1200 euros : shame on me ...
I dunno... I bought a CyberstormPPC for £360, even though I already had an AmigaOne by that point. I couldn't really justify it other than my Cyberstorm 060 was "a bit flaky".
Actually, I must have spent almost £2000 on my A4000, but that is over a period of 4 years or so.

65e for gp32... not that the price is any bad, but the device itself is kinda useless :) (quite rare in finland, though)
i paid more than 1000dm (~500E) for my amiga cdtv, right when it hit the german stores. and more than 1000dm went off for my first c64 and its belonging equipment, i think the screen was the most expensive beast there.
When I lived at home my mum paid for my Atari ST and my Amigas.
But then I moved because of university, and when I bought my first PC in 1997 I emptied my account and had to borrow 100 euros to buy food. Couldn't afford tiolet paper. The amount was not high (about 1700 euros) but clearly insane.

I bought a Mac.
that's gotta be the specci beta disk interface + 3,5"DD drive for sure. the package retailed for ~400 € at german computerseller vobis at that time, when an amiga 1000 was about 800€. ^^
I think it was a 20mb HD for my A500 back in 1990 or so ;-)
Or maybe my PC 3,2 GHZ 1gb RAM 330gb HD etc etc. which i bought new early this year for EUR 1049 at the aldi supermarket ;-)
well I bought an Atari and then 2 months after an Amiga (yes... it had massive sound, not the Atari).
Obviously a waste of money :\

hm i spent £800 (€1120) on 2 amigas to have a kick3.0 and kick 3.1 a1200s... and about £120 (€168) on a 4meg fastram expansion for my a500... then £80 for modems.. all the money i spent running my bbs is scary, lol..
xeron, i've seen your a4000.. it scares me.

HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU ALL SPEND ON TELEPHONE COSTS FOR YOUR MODEM BACK IN THE DAYS UH? FUCKING TO MUCH I'D SAY!!! :) :P
I got my first job to pay my parents back for the first phonebill after i got my first modem ;-)
When a friend of mine lend me his usr dst in 91 for some months, my parents insisted on me having my own phoneline..
100e for a gba flashcart + linker
In 1994 I bought an used Gravis Ultrasound MAX for 34,000 HUF, and I was the happiest person on this planet, and besides, all my friends adored me. GUS was rare, the Max was not available at all. That time an average monthly salary was around 40-50,000 HUF.
34,000 Hungarian Forint = 168.117 US Dollar
not that bad a deal for the time.. but that makes the avg monthly salary pretty scary..
i (okay, my dad :) shelled out $160 in 1992 for my sound blaster pro "basic" edition (a steal, most were going for > $200), and then another $40 for the sb "midi kit" (software + cable) which i used for about one month before i found a mod tracker. :)

1600€ for my laptop when i already had a decent pc with a 21 inch monitor.... and before that two years in a row graphics boards for ~500€ on christmas... the first one was a geforce 2 ultra, the second a geforce 3 ti 500... dunno what i was thinking back then. i wish i had that money back now...
I forget how much was paid, but I purchased a 200 MHz 604e w/ 50 MHz 68060 CyberstormPPC for my Amiga4000 when they were brand spanking new. Although the '060 side was immediately useful, the PPC proved almost entirely useless.
On the other hand, I eventually sold my A4000 on eBay for an obscene amount of cash which allowed me to purchase a half-decent PC with CDN$500 left over.
More recently, this time last year I bought an ATI X800 Pro when they were pretty new, which cost me about CDN$700.

i took a student loan and spent it all on my ibook, 1200euros.
I spent lot of money, with the bill phone to did some IRC :)
for my falcon: i spent 360 EUR on my CT60 in total, and 280 EUR *gulp* for the rack casing.
Well.. I paid with an Amiga 1200 68030@50 with 120mb HD and 8mb fast ram... to get a mustek scanner.. worst moment in my life
A few months ago though.. I got my revenge on that scanner (see the Pixelshow Outdoor Activity Report video)

Like I'd ever have money for anything computer-related. I guess it's the 8 euros I paid for GUS MAX a few years ago or something like that.
