Importance of Greetings nowadays
category: general [glöplog]
Hi everybody!
Since I picked up my scene activity late last year I wondered how you view greetings or shoutouts to groups (or individuals [which was actually new to me]) in scene productions as of now.
I was told that this considered as scene "folklore" nowadays and could be skipped entirely, but I personally think that this is an essential part of bonding (I lack a better term here) of the demoscene community.
Also I take personaly pleasure in making the greetings part of a demo a "thing" by giving it it's of effect and space/purpouse in a production.
I am interested to hear your stance on that topic :-)

Impo, the greetz (both groups and personal ones) are an important and inseparable(!) part of the scene since the beginning (rankings;).
It is also important I think to greet those groups/dudez who are no longer active but were there at some point (and perhaps still are watching demos from time to time =).
Greetz!

implementing greetings into a demo reduces the possible structure of a demo quite abit.
it might fit to your envisioned demostyle ... or not. but due to the historical relevance and the social aspect i would not exclude it per se. if it fits put it in. if not ... leave it out.

Greetings to everyone in this thread!
If I would guess, greetings started out of a desire to a) take up space in demos (if your entire demo was a scroller, what would you fill it with?), and b) semi-communicate in a time when you couldn't just easily just talk to people for free. Both of these are less important now.
That being said, there's definitely more to it than that. I still watch greetings lists from groups I only vaguely know, in the hopes of being mentioned.

And that's exactly what "folklore" means in this context (a term coined by Raytrayza btw).
I don't think greetings should be skipped in general, but they are often used as cheap filler part when your demo is low on content - just like adding a Revision logo for no apparent reason.
There are greetings parts which are very well integrated into the style and flow of a demo and make perfect sense there!
(like in Lemon.'s Deprofundis for example).

I am considering a policy of “gratituous Revision logo or boing ball = automatic thumb down”, it's so cheap.
What xeNusion said.
Sesse, I was so fucking angry at Revision this year about exactly those two things, so I swore to adopt exactly the policy you mention. My rage may or may not have subsided since then.
It's an after thought sometimes, like, a demo without greetings? Don't forget to add a part with it, like days before the deadline, ok.. here is the extra greetings part, who are we gonna greet? :)
Greetings to Spreadpoint and to those I forgot (not necessarily to you).
I’ve always liked how greetings serve as a way to pay respect to the pioneers of the craft, much like saluting a founder’s portrait in a dojo. It is a unique tradition where you have to put in the effort to produce a screen specifically to honor those you respect, past or present. This is actually quite rare in other art forms. Now, greetings might not always fit your design (no greets in State of the Art!). So do it if you can, use the traditional end scroller to greet if you can't do it before, and well, not a big deal if not compatible with your design. I would always try to have a greetings screen, to me it's one of the defining elements of a demo.
actually, sometimes I even skip 'credits' part in my demos :)
folklore like greetings, credits, revision logos are the ingredients of what holds this scene back as an artform and condemns it to everlasting insignificance. I respect this scene - in the same way I respect a club of 60-80 years old ex-rockers in a motorcycle repair club. that IS fine and cool in its own way, ofc. :)
I sorta agree with @bifat here. Greetings are boring.
Greetings sind die Zahnpasta des Teufels
what bifat said. also sometimes greetings are very creative

A drinking game based on this would be brutal.

Turning the Revision logo into the boing ball? :D :D :D

Thank you!!!
i thought greetings were the ideal 'shit, we have this ~15 seconds lull in the soundtrack where we dunno what visuals to show before the demo picks up again'-solution to a problem.
and re: boing ball drinking game... don't do this with whisky. also o/ to sagacity ;)
