Older versions of demotools

category: general [glöplog]

I'm going through old CDs off the Internet Archive etc. and coming across older versions of demotools already uploaded. I notice people often include the version number in the name of the prod so does this mean there is value in hosting these older releases here too or are they not wanted?
Thanks.

Generally speaking, older versions of demotools should not be added to this site. A possible exception could be if the newer version has less functionality compared to the older one but this is obviously an uncommon situation and even if it is applicable it is recommendable to check with staff before adding such an older version.

Also, FWIW, this site does not host any donwloads, maybe scene.org staff could comment on whether they want older tool versions in their archive.

Agree with Havoc - normally newer is better - no need to point to e.g. Windows versions past 7 as evidence for the opposite. (Or e.g. DPaint 4+ with the rather useless palette requester.)

There might be exceptions, such as trackers after 2.3D/E/F (e.g. 3.11, 3.15, 3.62) but it's up to the know-how and experience of the uploader.

You would have to know how to motivate a copy here, as opposed to already available where you found it, I guess?

E.g. DOC Soundtracker 3 belongs here because it was used widely before Noisetracker and Protracker 2.3D. There will be trackers who were famous on many platforms and which belong here.

I don't think we would mind well-packaged, curated influential demotools on Pouet. If we used them, they would have been open source/free or cracked versions used for demos.

From a historical perspective, I think saving older versions of demotools is interesting, just like any other history preservation. (Likewise, emulators offer Kickstart 1.2 even though 1.3 was generally better.) But probably not as separate Pouët entries per version, no.

It's sort of weird that people silently change their prods to incorporate fixes and changes; if you press the download button on Pouët, you're in no way guaranteed to see exactly what the other commenters saw. I noticed this when trying to re-crawl my mirror at some point; a surprising amount of files had changed without changing the URL…

Well Pouet.net is not technically a preservation site (about completeness, documentation, every version so you can have one that guaranteed runs well etc).

It has a great role and a great point of Pouet-ing (saying hey/posting) that latest thing you did. :) Spreading like on BBS, but with consequences. :D
