The problem is very soon we won't be able to distinguish between those two like we already have trouble to proof with 100% certainty, what part of kapsel posts is AI and what is his own.

To be clear: I don't like it either, but we can't pretend like it's not happening and soon the AI usage will be normalized.

This is not the kind of demo which is worth making, especially since there is no prospect of improvement (since it wasn't even a learning exercise).

It probably amazes people who have never seen a decent demo before though, which includes the vast majority of people who are enthusiastic about AI and vibecoding today.

If AI generated stuff becomes normalized in the demoscene community I'd just quit (and I literally just got here)

But we, as as a relatively small community don't have to normalize it. We set the compo rules, we vote, we fight.

As long as there's no pro AI mercenaries around we can just ignore it and disqualify prods that are blatantly AI product, which I guess organizers already do

Maybe worth explicitly mentioning AI-generated code, as content could be understood as gfx/music.

The problem with code is, however, it's much harder to verify, especially when you don't have to disclose the source code.

I believe this is not a problem: Smart sceners are able to determine the information density and quality in a text they are exposed to, that's why kapsel immediately got called out for slop.

The same is true for demos. That one amiga prod with the slop gfx at revision got immediately called out.

people need to realize that slop can only fool inexperienced consumers or npcs, artists will notice immediately.

just as skilled coders will identify vibe slop with ease because of the broken or interpolated design and the missing precision.

authors of slop really need to ask themselves: "do I want to look like a three-weeks in beginner to actual professionals?"

@leaq : some people in this scene hysterically support everything AI made, even sub-par or even downright awful stuff. And hysterically oppose any objective critique to AI assisted prods as “biocentric hate speech”. Old ham is a perfect example of this. I don’t know if he is supported by many, but I can see he is tolerated at the least. Not many oppose his poseur wordbites.

Not that big of an issue in my opinion, since demos that run AI generated code will be either generic, run poorly or not run at all. If we're talking about JS/Webasm/WebGL or Windows/Linux/Mac demos then I buy it, because you can slap shitass code and it'll still run.

For 68k platforms and DOS you could still slide some of that garbage in but I bet it would run pretty bad. x86 codegen is about the best an AI can do when it comes to assembly because there's so much documentation out there, and yet you're lucky if you can get ChatGPT to write you a protected mode VGA plotter that works in DOS. 8 bit systems don't even count on AI for anything.

My bet is AI reaches “the legend of sisyphus” in 2026.

Can be as minimal as you like, just choose your weapon. Exe gfx is imo the easiest category to produce something that's actually "a prod", and if you pick a platform that I don't know (eg 6502, ZX spec), you'd have a major advantage. I already see you have a good understanding of assembly.

4gentE: it's a spectrum, you are definitely strongly anti-AI, but surely there are people here leaning to the "center" so to say. Also, I doubt anyone here is fully pro-AI, after all the discussion and rationale, especially not in the demoscene context.

In any case, everyone on the Demoscene Discord channel #pouet can verify that what you claim was a private message directed at Gargaj was actually a question directed at the entire channel ("Who is 4gentE?", posted 9/25/2024, 12:26 AM). Gargaj replied, "I'm so glad I'm quitting, LOL." And then, after telling me he didn't know you, he told me that you were on Discord, and then there was a private message, but directed at you, where I posted a screenshot of the public channel, and you (in case you really believe what you say) thought it was a private message with Gargaj (or are lying now by describing it that way; as no one can ever know if you're sincere, even when you're ranting).

But sending you that private message didn't do much good, did it? Instead of coming to your senses, you doubled your trolling.

I feel it’s slowly shifting toward anti-AI. The general sentiment. Some people are opening their eyes. But I could be wrong, it’s more a general feeling than real measurement. Even jamon here is way less enthusiastic and unapologetic about it. But he apparently lacks integrity to even acknowledge it. In five years time he could be proudly claiming that he was always anti-AI, mark my words. Fortunately internet remembers everything.
