My C64 YouTube links for demos etc. are rejected with the words: no :: 60hz crap

That's possible indeed, but not really in a live stream. :-)

It then feeds these signals to an emulated VIC II running inside an FPGA
Oh yeah, we've seen at X'24 how well that goes with bleeding-edge effects. =D

It means the audio pitch will be off by a few % of a semitone
Does it? Can time-shift the audio as well to preserve pitch, no?

Well, pitch-preserving time stretch transformations exist, but in my experience they typically mess up the sound somewhat, especially if the material is of a synthetic nature. I would consider a purely resampled (and thus pitch-shifted) version to be truer to the original.

While we’re overengineering things - I remember in 86 or 87ish somebody built a genlock interface for the C64 that synced the VIC‘s video signal to an external source by strategically halting the system clock. That would fix all the not-exactly-PAL timing issues :) (let‘s not think about what that does to the audio, shalln‘t we)

Frankly, the way Commodore put those things together, like they were constantly scraping dozens of old warehouses, I get a feeling it’s a small miracle advanced code for one VIC-II/SID combo works as supposed on some other VIC-II/SID combo.

Simply audio it responsibly.

Yeah, OK, that explains the Schneller Schalter. (It sounds almost like a fast demo name.)

"Schneller Schalter" :D Better than that "Turbo" button which was actually just a reversed "Slow" button. Also reminds of a very early demo, Der schnelle Hut.

I’d wildguess the purpose of this thingy was perhaps subtitling pirated VHS tapes while not having to buy an MSX for the purpose.

Yes indeed. Video title generators were the shit back then :)
