How to deal with plagiarism in the scene?

category: general [glöplog]
Akira: eh. who "works in advertising"?

you just have no idea how lame your entertainment would be if people who create stuff didnt "rip" and adapt other people's ideas.

and just a thought: with respect to parties and the storage of prods on scene.org: let's say everyone suddenly begins owning up to their plagiarism and everything becomes transparent. say every prod were to list each and every source borrowed in their info. files. and let's say those sources are copyright material (very likely), wouldn't the admittance mean that scene.org and any party would IMMEDIATELY have to disqualify/remove said prod? at least if everyone keeps silent, distributers of productions can legally plead ignorance.

i think it's best if we all keep our mouths shut and say no more on this subject, I can imagine the RIAA are rubbing their hands ready to set the textscan bots onto each prod's zip file.

i bet the RIAA could rub their hands ready on many other bigger cases than the demoscene when it comes to unauthorized use of *

also, parties shouldnt be the regulating factor here, it's impossible to check (unknown) sources unless you're omnipotent. it's rather self-regulating. do you wanna get busted for blatant reuse? but the concepts seem pretty vague. e.g. as smash described already. i dont see his blunderbuss demo as a bad rip but these stills from a video are quite bad. i guess the debate should be on what's blatant and what's not ;P
Jesus christ peoplz, you guys brainwaves are weird as fuck..
i'm a bit druink, but still i object to loads of shit in this thread!

Now i'll rock some hIP hOP with SMAPLES!

I guess there is nothing wrong with that, gasman just proposes that we note it. It doesn't hurt and avoids stupid discussions and "hey hey hey, duid you know that group xxxx ripped that stuff from yyyyy?". and the "they were trying to hide it!"-reactions. That way everybody is happy, and and who knows, it might even have the side effect of people getting to know artists that would otherwise never get to know.

(and that was an answer to Navis, dunno how I managed to skip page 4). BTW, Navis, are you going to Euskal?

remember ten commandments? 8th commandment says "You shall not steal". Obey this, that's important. Forget about the rest. Fuck your neighbors or whatever you want. You are free to do something illegal (we are coming from crack scene remember?) but keep originality, don't steal! That's my only commandment to you. vote me at the scene prophet elections.

This website link posted by bdk above, I have no problems with, because it's not a straightforward set of rips, but pixel-by-pixel recreations, with modifications in many places. It's good for burgeoning pixel artists to practice on, with limited palettes and so on, before they feel confident enough to embark on their own original pixel works.

This, however, sucks balls and is obviously scanned direct images, and unless the artists were credited, then it's stolen. Only the music is new (I hope).

This, by comparison, may be scanned and converted images, but at least the original artist is given full credit.

hip 2 hop is only good with smaples.
Disagree, it can also be good without samples. Sampling is awesome tho and giving credit is goo and cool!

I brought A plagiarism post back, this one, because I thought it ought to be discussed. This one seemed to do the job well without me starting another one.

Plagiarism is rife in society, even in game level design, for example: I remember a Quake level design rule set where one of the rules was "plagiarise shamelessly", but I don't know where it came from, possibly a magazine. The point is, there's only so many original ideas in Hollywood and TV, and they've more or less all been mined to death. Why else so many rehashes and remakes and sequels of the same movie franchises, TV shows, etc? Same with the Demoscene! My take on this is simple: if it came from somewhere else, credit it at the end of the demo, not before, but DO credit it.

I LOL'ed at trc_wm who said that his bathroom mirror plagiarised him every morning when he looked at it!

Reminds me of the anti piracy ads during the mid 2000s.

You wouldn't rip a Rob Hubbard tune and use it in your cracktro
You wouldn't rip topaz1.3 8x8 font and use it on PS1/Mega Drive/MS DOS Cracktro
You wouldn't use cardz to make calls to upload your release on a BBS.

Ripping with out credit is a thumbs down, thumbs down on pouet is shame.

Thumbs up for Boris Vallejo and Rob Hubbard tunes in scene prods on Amiga

To supplement myself from 13 years ago, maybe sceners should start considering using art licenses for their work more often, like the creative commons licenses, which are easy to read and they don't require you to be a lawyer to comprehend them. :)
