So, how dead is it?

category: general [glöplog]
I honestly don’t know if I care enough to add my releases to pouet anymore.

The whole “host the binary yourself” (or wait for scene.org) and single lowres screenshot doesn’t help. But the bigger problem is, that for me it went so far old school that it no longer provides any meaningful creative input or feedback.

I am not sure what an alternative creative platform would look like… definitely not instagram.

Must be my winter depression kicking in.

demozoo definitely does a better job of having prods listed faster.
but seems no one really comments there much so not much out of it in terms of feedback.

then again pouet was never very notorious for it's constructive criticism, seems to be less caustic lately but also lacking more comments in general. either less people see new released demos or less people seem to bother commenting anything.

i would venture guessing that the reason people shy away from commenting is believing they have nothing relevant to add. they don't want to flame something they didn't particularly like and don't have patience/capacity to write a properly constructive feedback or engage into a discussion about it. so most comments turn out to be pats in the back for job well done, which is always nice to receive but doesn't really give much in terms of feedback.

maybe it's time to pick back up the idea for a website i had over a decade ago, a place to swap constructive feedback, based on karma points of some sort. with a few rules in place on how to engage constructively / non toxic; give feedback to others looking for some and accrue points that you can then use to ask others to give constructive feedback on your own stuff. either finished or WIP.

or ressurect the concept of demogroups where members give their fellow group members honest feedback on what they been doing on a regular basis :P which seems to have been a bit abandoned nowdays

I saw this thread and I had feelings. I almost wrote a reply.

I almost reply too. Demozoo is not bad, you can put nice FHD screenshots there.

don't you think that the problem is not in Pouet, but in the fact that the demoscene has become interested in much less people than before?

you can see that the number of downloads of releases from scene.org is also very small. And if you don’t attach a YouTube video to the release, then no one will look at the prod.

Well, most sceners are close to 50 years old nowadays. They have been doing the same sort of things for decades. So probably it is a natural law that their activity is declining.

A couple of days ago I added this on pouet only to be deleted a little bit later.. this has happened to me before as well.. It's sad that valid releases are treated that way, I have expressed my disagreement about this before. But it is what it is, demozoo is the way to go these days in terms of prod inclusiveness, pouet seems to me that it is in some sort of 'archival' mode so..

How else CAN they look at the prod? Emulation? Not everyone has every major platform set up and ready to run these, whereas YouTube is available to all, even if the quality varies massively.

On the online side of things my impression is that the community is shifting much more away from pouet to sub communities on discord. (and/or other chats)
And in general I guess a lot of people are drained by the recent years of real life - be it pandemic, war, economic situation - and the lack of real-life demoparties didn't make it better.
At least those are coming back again (also doing my best there), but I believe lot of people are craving for a real-life revision again (at least I am for sure!)

...and in regards to pouet comments I can only speak for myself, but I still have a huge backlog of prods to watch on my backlog or prods I want to re-watch before I comment. And this is because there was so much released this year, which is contrary to the believe that the secene is dead. It just is sharded and has a visibility problem maybe.
So yeah, maybe we need a better, more engaging platform

But windows-products also mostly look only at youtube (as it seems to me).

And after all, what's the point then? If demosceners are not even interested in running the prods in Dosbox... Maybe then do animations, why coding? ;)

but there are no barriers to running prods for oldschool platforms on a Mac, right?

Well. And I too do not try to run every release on my computer. My bad.

So where would I be best off - I'm into small asm programming for DOS.

I was astonished at what people have managed, but when I thought to post some of my stuff was dismayed that there's no file hosting!

Yeah I'm 50+, so OldSkool.

No. But why should i run an emulator, fight with settings and stuff - when i can just hit a play button and enjoy it in HD or higher?

I don’t want to imply that the scene is dead. Just that the response on pouet is so unrelevant that I now personally prefer parties, discord and live events. I just realized that as a forum for discussing and feedback pouet got stuck 10 years ago. And as a platform for presenting stuff, well…

Regarding real-time: As a designer I couldn’t care less. I present my own stuff on YouTube without any hesitation. IMHO the only thing that justifies real-time is interaction.
But I totally see how it would be great to have an alternative like scene city or demozoo for hosting and presenting captures and high res screenshots.

Anyways. sorry for rambling. I will go into my corner and work on stuff.

Why have sex when you can see how it looks in HD quality ;)

Was pouet ever the place where releasing is happening? It always for me was "after the fact", the place to look for demos that have been released at a party or elsewhere.

That said, it must sound incredibly insulting to Gargaj and the pouet team. I am super grateful for their tirelessly work on keeping this thing running ad free, without any form of compensation for so many years.

Thanks are in order!

You forget about randomness which can be specific to demos.

I still view Pouet as main place on the Internet for Scene.

Maybe we all just need to make less shitty prods.

Is there an example of another community that offers good constructive feedback on this kind of demoish videos?
