Assembly Summer 2022 - 4.-7.8.2022 - Helsinki, Finland
category: parties [glöplog]
We welcome you to celebrate demoscene and our beloved 30-year-old event with us during ASSEMBLY Summer 2022. Once again, we have a wide range of demoscene competitions coming up. Besides the usual competitions, we will bring you a bit extra with In-Game Short film and In-Game Graphics competitions we launched this winter and you will also see not one, but two Oldskool competitions. And that’s not all, this summer we will have the compo you’ve all been waiting for: The W I D E S C R E E N competition!
This time there will be no esports delaying compos on the main stage as we’ve got that pretty much for demoscene content only! This has given us also the opportunity to bring Shader Showdown to the biggest screen (40m wide) in Finland.
The compos and rules have been published at https://party.assembly.org/summer22/program/democompot
In addition to compos, Assembly 30 Years Awards take place on Thursday 4th of August 2022 at the main stage. Come and see which demos will be awarded in 30 years of Assembly -competition. Voting for 30 years of Assembly opens on 9th of July during a stream on twitch where the nominees are revealed.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidescreen!
Why no oldskool graphics?
Why in-game compos?
Why in-game compos?

Why not? Sounds like a fun idea.

The advancement of lamerization sounds fun for those who don't care.
The 90's called, they want their "people who play Doom are lamers" mentality back
Obviously there wasn't yet enough game stuff in Assembly
I am guessing that browser demos go in the main real-time demo competition. Are there any special rules that apply?

You've yet to explain why that's a bad thing, other than it "advances lamerization" (which, I would again like to point out, is some prime old-man-yells-at-cloud wank rhetoric) and that there's no oldskool graphics compo (which, as far as I can tell, Assembly hasn't had for at least 10 years anyway so there's absolutely no connection there).
Anyway, I for one am looking forward to enjoying the Shader Showdown, and hopefully I'll get something done for the compos too!

I mean, you're here.

Yes, those go to the main real-time compos be it intro or demo or widescreen etc. No special rules but it is helpfull if you provide an option to run the demo in fullscreen mode and use e.g. pnd-packers for intros.

Well why not create something out of the games? Something creative and interesting. Doesn't sound too bad to me. It's not like demosceners do not play any games.

Well, I'm afraid my game project is probably too "undergroundish" for Assembly but I could submit some game inspired graphics instead. It just feels strange that I have to enlarge my image's size sixfold to make it fulfill compo's requirements. This really makes me wonder if they want oldskool graphics at all (in comparison Creative Tech '21 rules didn't set resolution requirements for the image file).
And related to previous messages: there actually has been oldskool gfx compos in Assembly just before the pandemic times, though they were called pixel graphics.
Pixel graphics was a Scene Lounge compo in 2018 and 2019, but the last time there was an official pixel/extreme/oldskool graphics compo was in 2010
I wonder if it's Truck's beard or what that makes rays of officiality to bounce back, thus causing Scene Lounge to contain smaller quantity of officiality than the rest of Assembly.
And considering your image is going to be scaled at some point anyway, wouldn't it be better that you do it yourself to make sure that it looks the way you intended?
^Well, if you say there's no problem with those rules then there probably isn't. It just felt strange.

Assembly 30 Years Awards nominees are published now. I guess there will be some more announcements and the video will appear somewhere, but you can already start voting at https://scene.assembly.org/.
Why is Codename Chinadoll nominated under the Ground Breaking Production category? It was only released at The Party in 1999—not at Assembly—wasn't it, or am I missing something?
There seems to have been some mess up, I'll try to get it sorted :)
According to this https://www.pouet.net/party_results.php?which=7&when=1999 it was disqualified at Assembly the same year, so by some standards it probably is an "Assembly" prod...
I conducted some investigation and found this in the nfo file:
So the prod must have been re-entered at The Party. I don't know if Assembly released disqualified entries or not in 1999, but at least in 2000 they did, at least some of them.

this demo was done in august 1999.
due to ill circumstances, namely passing away of the coder, the demo
never was able to take it's final form and it's still "as it was" and there's
nothing we could do about it.

Thanks for the clarification, should've remembered to check the infofile as well :). In this case only the information "PC accelerated demo competition, 1999, 5th place" incorrect. Considering Saint by Halcyon and da Jormas from two years earlier is also included I'd say it's a fair guess disqualified releases from 1999 were also spread.
I do still find it amusing that among the groundbreaking productions there are two that didn't even qualify for the competition… :)

It would be really nice to already have:
1) A publicly viewable list of the nominations, ie: not behind a login. With screenshots, links to videos/audio (where appropriate) and..
2) A few sentences about each nominee and *why* they were nominated
