Google : "Don't be evil... Just be stupid !"

category: residue [glöplog]

Heads up !

Tl;dr : Google using same "advanced" (not) FUD false-positive ridden technology to blacklist entire sites as McAfee is is using when banning legitimate Pup such as netcat. Too bad for the rest says Google.

Google is wrongfully blacklisting entire sites with its so-called Safe Browsing technology : for example it is reporting self-modigying code of Futura for example by stating the blog hosting it is harmful to users when the latter try to download it.

The flawed logic behind this censorship seems similar to MacAfee's notably bearing netcat on its list of unwanted programs :
-some viruses uses netcat therefore the download of the the legitimate netcat binary is forbidden altogether ;
-some viruses use self-modifying code therefore the download of some legitimate demoscene code using self-modifying code is forbidden altogeter and entire site blacklisted.

This automated form of sophism elevated to an undisputable truth for the Internet masses is quite disenchanting for the early BBS freeware community who grew up with the likes of Fred Fish
in the mid'80s like myself.

Google's motto : "Don't be evil... Just be stupid !".

Ps : thanks to Twitter user wil-skeleton-kie for the heads up

that's fucked up, next level censorship following the footsteps of virus checker false positives for intros using packers.

It is exactly the same issue that has existed for years. This is not news and nothing has changed, websites hosting 4ks/64ks ended up in the Google SafeBrowsing blacklist for the last few years.
Solution for this problem: Dont use Chrome

I got the warning when I tried to go to olivier.poudade.free.fr directly in Vivaldi. With "Google safe browsing & malware protection" turned off, predictably it let me through.

So, yep. Much wider effect than just Chrome users. I suspect most major browsers offer the Google blacklisting "service" these days.

You'd think they'd know how to tell a DOS program in a zip file from some web-executable hijack script...

Tried olivier.poudade.free.fr as well, no problems?

CMUCC had this problem a few years ago. We host a scene.org mirror, and Symantec or McAfee or some other useless AV vendor flagged Elevated as a virus, and as a result they added the entirety of cmu.edu to their blacklist, causing us a lot of grief. I still like what the author of that prod had to say about it, basically "Do you really think we could manage to fit a virus in there?"

Elevated truly is infectious;)

Got the same issue with Firefox on your site. I don't know how far we can blame browsers though. Malicious software generators allow people to create thousands of new malware every day, and it becomes impossible for anti-viruses to check for them all. So they need to clusturize and categorize programs behavior, an yeah, sometimes resulting in flagging false positives as malware. "better leave a thief free than putting an innocent into prison" is a good behavior for humans, but this is not an antivirus policy. As you can still click "I understand the risk" and access the suspicious content, I'm fine with it. Don't forget most of browsers users have no idea of what could be harmful.

Breaking news! Someone has finally noticed that AV is part of the problem rather than part of the solution! :O
