what to do with hates / permanent thumbdowners?

category: general [glöplog]
If we introduce thumb left and thumb right, thumb down will be half as bad.

Can anyone come up with any suggestion for improvement that does not involve changing technological systems and mechanisms. Would it be possible to alter one's behaviour without external governing and management? Would it be possible that a change in even a single person's behaviour could have an effect on others, without technology-imposed restrictions? No! Machine-guided humans have superior performance. ;)

I think it's a nice idea yzi. But human nature says otherwise.

There are always going to be people who are fuckwits, not because they have to be but because they can be.

Easy non-technical solution: change thumb down icon to a heart.

Thumb down should be changed to a hug icon. Then it would be more like a consolation, "I feel sorry for you pal. You made a bad product, but next time you'll make a better one for sure"

"what to do with hates / permanent thumbdowners?"

nothing. they are trying to make a point or they are just sick/depressed to a point giving "negative internet points" is their relay for this inner itch they are suffering from. best you can do is to reach out to them, or if that doesn't work, make a witty (but probably non-hurtful) comment and move on.

if you're the type of person whose life can be greatly influenced by something as insignificant as a torrent of pouet thumb downs, then you should also consult with a professional about how not to put importance into things that don't matter and how to focus on more important things.

I think jco's idea of a thumb left and thumb right is a spectacularly good idea and I also think that it totally fits the ethos of pouet.net. I hope Gargaj agrees (and I'll gladly contribute the PR if that's what's needed).

Not political enough and who needs thumbs anyway. Let's replace them with a political compass!

haha shit, you're right! i hadn't even thought of that, but indeed of course people are going to interpret it that way. if there's one thing that's awesome about the scene (!== pouet, etc) is how unpolitical it is.

maybe we can rotate the thumbs around the X axis instead? :-D

tbh those thumbdowns for old hugis look more like bullying than anything else to me.

Hm, kinda sad with those thumbdowns on the old Hugis, they clearly look like true passion projects to me, and somehow I don't think the contents are as controversial as in later releases by Adok.

I been thinkin...

What is the motivation behind telling someone your opinion that you dislike something by downvoting, instead of giving constructive criticism?

Backstory: At first i really was an enemy of the FB "Like-only"-policy. I wanted to hate stuff. But then i understood that it is enough to state that you like something. And if you have a problem with something: speak out.

And if, for ego reasons, one needs to manipulate points, bully or discourage people, they have to visit a demoparty, where there is a point-based ranking system. And physically present authors. And their gang.
