Imho it's quite unlikely that Zapad 2017 (the Russian military training operation that is probably cause of the fuzz) would be any more than showing of some muscle as there has been tensions between EU and Russia. There's not much unbiased media coverage anywhere, so hard to get any real information.

First of all, try to keep calm. In such situations of distress panic is the worst advisor... take a paper and a pencil and start planing about what to do next and what are going to be your next steps. also tune in to your local or country news channels, if something as an invasion is going to take place they are certainly going to report it. as for the communications, when the military operates the communications are usually completely cut off. try to keep contact with her as much as possible. also i agree with waffle if there is constant uncertainty in a region it is better to get a visa and leave out. finally could please explain what do you mean with 'thrown off facebook'? you can't access your account or it was deleted? try to establish communication from another social media platform, twitter maybe? Hope things will get better in time, wish you luck!

Zapad 2017 is located in Belorus, if russians are crazy so much to go further in Ukraine they will go not only to Ukraine... but the main purpose of this action to make people like scare about that...
Berdyansk is totally safe place, my friends had vacation there last month.
In case if russians will attack us we have to fight and keep calm, because in such case it will be a problem for everyone who lives in Europe.

Long story short: He's not trying to scam, but is desperately trying to get a former employer to pay him what he thinks they own him after firing him after two days. Probably hoping they'd be understanding if they were to be convinced of this whole invasion story and feel sorry for his situation.
