Revision 2017 - 14th to 17th April - Saarbrücken, Germany
category: parties [glöplog]
To Revision organizers: thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you. :) This was a most excellent weekend and there are too many good things that happened to list.
I have only one minor complain: please do a pre-selection for PC demo.
The problem is not too many entries, but too many bad/troll entries. I usually happily cheer at a beginner's entry, but it gets difficult to continue doing so after a dozen bad entries, to the point even good entries get more difficult to appreciate. For the author, it's also not necessarily a good to get their prod on screen when it's clear they're going to rank far down, compared to telling them they should rework a bit and come to another party. Moreover, Revision doesn't exactly lack entries, while some smaller parties struggle to get a big enough compo. So, in my eyes, pre-selection would be a win for everyone.

Now I would like to personally address a very warm, huge, 3D rotating, uppercase, ultrabold FUCK YOU to whoever thought it was ok to steal three bottles of liquor from our table, especially so when I had taken the trouble of bringing two of them from fucking 9000km away in Japan to share with my friends. Stealing booze when there is some sold for a few bucks in a party with an entrance fee of 65€ is just mindbogglingly pathetic.
What a blast! Thanks to all organizers!
I vote against pre-selection of PC demo, but please start the sunday evening block at 2100!
And never forget MS2002 had 40 entries, so these 26 were honestly harmless ;-)

I guess the question is not "pre-selection or not" (in theory, there is already the possibility for each any any compo to apply pre-selection), but rather "what's the upper limit for the runtime of a demo compo", and apparently some people think that 2h is way over the top while others think it's more than okay. Discuss.
Are two 1h compos worse than a single 2h one?
It's an interesting winner-takes-all issue. Most smaller parties have problems getting prods for a proper compo, while Revision just overflows with them. :-)
As a stream viewer, I second that the compo block should just start earlier.

Complaint: I need at least one more day (preferrably two) of Revision to achieve complete satisfaction.
On another note, I've attended Revision six times now, and three times I've had to leave for the hotel before the PC demo compo started, two times I've fallen asleep in my chair during the compo, and once I've actually managed to see the entire compo from beginning to end.
Luckily the PC demo compo is far from the highlight of the party for me, so I wouldn't care that much if it just continues to be this way. Just an FYI for the organizers.

Form a personal point of view I have to say I'm mildly amused by the fact that some people see it as bad thing to have more releases. For me those demos account for the 'demo' part in 'demoparty' but each entitled to it's own of course! Whenever possible I love to make some quick partyprods. Knowing that they would fail to meet the high standards would force me to release 'm at other parties which kinda misses the moment. For me the joy comes out of hacking things together last minute and seeing them on the bigscreen a couple of hours later.
I do understand the need and fun of big productions that take months to realise, but not everyone has that much time available. I think that by applying a strict preselection you take a lot of the fun out of the game. You'll end up with no 'demo' and no 'party' if you only offer a platform to the 10 or so big groups that do those stunning quality releases we all come like so much.
You can't break an omlet and stuff you know? Give some love to the smaller groups, you'll find out
that after some time to nurture and some releases they grow up and start doing epic releases as well.
(I'm in no way involved in the compo team so this is purely my personal view on the subject.) I loved this editition! I thank Gabbie of Poo-Brain for the ride, and it was cool to stay one more extra day. Beforehand I had to leave earlier and I'm glad I got to help in the teardown this year as well. Should have figured out earlier that this is the best way to cope with post-party vibes.
See you all at Outline!

That was, without a doubt, one of the most exciting and record-breaking oldskool compos I've ever seen (and I'm saying that as one of the people who made 8088 MPH). A true tour-de-force, and I wish I could have been there with you.
Almost forgot: Both ctrix and wayfinder's concerts did not disappoint, but I only see the stream video for ctrix. Will wayfinder's be made available? Better yet, is there a mix from both concerts from the mixer without the crowd noise?
Well done, Kevin.
An additional Revision day would be perfect and would solve some issues. I think we are ready for that.
There is so much going on, that sometimes it's difficult to decide what to do. There are compo blocks in the same time as seminar (this year) or a dj set (last year), the dj sets are pushed because of the main stage concert (this year). Not to mention you have to choose between almost constantly running compos and socializing ;)
Additional day would nicely stretch the events so they are not colliding and add extra boozing time :)
Aaaaand then the final compo block could start few hours earlier, when people have still some energy left.

A massive, massive thanks to the organisers for doing this amazing event every year. It's a tremendous amount of work by extremely dedicated people, and I can't thank you enough that you find the time and energy to do this every year.
Also, a huge thanks to everyone I managed to talk to during the party, a bit "sorry" to those I didn't get a chance to properly talk to, though I wanted (there's simply just not enough time with all those great people).
Generally, this year I think the food was great (pizza slices perhaps being the only exception) and the compos were truly amazing! It was without doubt the toughest 4k pc compo I've ever witnessed.
Thanks to everyone who attended the seminar and the following workshop on size restricted (4k/8k) music on PC - it was really great fun to do that!
Also, kinda sorry I completely missed out on congratulating and giving hugs to Hoffman, Ferris, Gargaj and everyone else during the PC 64k intro prizegiving - Having hoped to barely make it into top 3, I was simply just so completely surprised that we won, that my mind kinda disconnected and just left my body flailing around with the other guys on stage. I'll have to make up for that at another party ;-)
The biggest thanks goes to everyone attending Revision, for making each easter the absolute highlight of the demoscene year! Afterall, demoscene IS my second family. So thank you everyone (except whoever stole booze from Zavie ... boooooh - totally un-demoscenish!!) and we'll meet again out there at other parties :)

What a great party again! Thanks for all organizers for that! And of course thanks to all attending and releasing as well! The party wouldn't be what it is without the awesome compos! :)
What comes to pre-selection of demos, I kind of understand why you'd want to do that. It is tough to watch a 2 hour compo even with a break as you tend to forget the entries and get distracted. However, there is a point not to do the pre-selection as well. After all it is the final compo so just from schedule perspective it can be long. And indeed it would take some fun out of the compo if it got too serious. The "bad"/joke/quick hack entries do not make the great demos less great. However, having a break during the compo was a good thing, otherwise it would have been just too much. And finally, if you are not interested, no one forces you to watch the compo.
What comes to the food this year I have only one wish: Keep the vegan food stand! It was amazingly good! And as a vegan I truly appreciate that I can have decent food at the party place. It is kind of difficult to bring all food with you as the proper grocery stores are open only at Saturday.
Last but not least: Cheers for everyone who made a 4k! It was an awesome compo! <3

I actually wanted to complain at the party about the lack of hot water in the shower but then I realized in the 5 years of Revision I think it only worked like once so it was like an old friend coming to visit. It's a friend I hate, but at this stage it's tradition and I'll just roll with it.
Thanks for the great party, not much to complain other than not having enough time and energy to talk to everyone I wanted to but that comes with the size of the project (damn why cant we have 2 weeks of Revision?? ;).
I eventually forgot to fetch my Heli Ball and thats ok (its less than 10 euros, no harm done), but I would be interested to know where it eventually ended up. Any ideas? =)

In the trash. Please never do this again during compos. You may not have noticed, but a lot of ppl were really pissed.
Yes, letting the heli ball fly during the compos was fucking annoying.
(same goes for pointing lasers and other lights at the bigscreen, which luckily did not happen during compos this year)
Yeah, the vegan stand was awesome! I loved the seitan chicken wrap, and judging from the fact that they run out of it every evening, plenty of omnivores must have loved it too :) Hopefully they'll return next year!
This was my second time at Revision (after missing last year), and again, it was the high point of the year so far. Friendly atmosphere, great compos and an afterglow of creative energy and overall motivation. I wouldn't be me without excellent parties like Revision, so thank you very much.
Hopefully I'll get to come next year as well!

Thanks for the great party, again!
Also, as a polish scener, thanks (or sorry!) to the dutch(?) guys for the friendly "take over" of their portable music system in the garden. :D

Yeah I noticed it was a bad idea during the live coding compo (sorry again cupe!) but somehow I was under the impression it was OK afterwards.
Sorry I didnt mean to annoy anyone but thanks for the feedback.
The damn thing was flying in front of the main stage during the final compo block. No, that is not OK.
Actually, regarding Gargaj's comment, it's the first time they DID have hot water in the showers, and I was pleasantly surprised. This was immediately after the 5k run.
