I have to admit, I have a thinkpad too. So good to come clean.
They used to have very good linux support, but I think that has changed a bit these days (just like the build quality and everything else)
This thread is devolving into spiny's beerbottle thread without the beer bottles... ;^]
sig: you forgot to rip out that stupid windows-key on the left side! ;)
I guess i should remove my CAPSLOCK-key finally...never found any use for those! Oh wait, my keyboard can blacklist keys and en-/disable them with a switch...imma add the CapsLock to that list! :D

Decades ago I coded a very simple tool which checks the state of the capslock key, capslock enabled = boot into full workbench, capslock off = boot straight into shell (default!). AMIIIIGGGAAAHHH :)

Splendid!
I think i made it with holding some F-Key iirc. Never thought of using the CapsLock for that...just because the key was considered useless/annoyance_only by me from c64-times already, so i completely ignored it i guess.
Here's where I do "actual" work that I am paid money for, i.e. my highly professional office in a serious academic environment. Yes, that is a ~$2000 21" monitor from 1995 that someone was trying to throw away for no good reason connected to my i7 workstation. Ditto for the G5.
I am advised to mention that there certainly aren't at least four trackers, Reaper, Dosbox, a bunch of emulators, and Steam installed on said i7 workstation. Nope nope nope.
Here's where I do my scene-ish things and other fun stuff:

never did any demowork on a car.

i am shocked how clean your rooms are.
Not quite as clean.
jobe: is that where "Fish you were here" was recorded?
Another "actual" workplace.
Picture was taken a bit over a year ago when I started my new job. I've since tried cleaning up a bit, but it didn't do much of a difference.
Most notable features:
A bunch of cabinets filled with 68040-powered industrial controllers and some I/O-racks, a 486-something still kept around for backwards compatibility and a 700 series HP 9000.

Do you still have that? that sounds so much more convenient than holding both mouse buttons, although I think I'd want the opposite behavior... I don't boot straight into shell that much :P

Of course! Code once, use forever! :)

That's no problem at all, just a matter of handling the return codes differently in your startup-sequence. :)

Mine are made out of stacked industrial cardboard, yours are straight-up pro. Craftsperson stands.
