I don't know if anyone else has tried, but if you use winex, it will run just about every windows demo there is! I had been messing with vanilla wine, and I got 40% of them to run, but with winex, I'd say 75% work perfectly. Even the directx ones.

What D3D8 demos/intros do you get to work in WineX? I've gotten exactly one to work -- FR-08 (and it's _software rendered_ -- WineX can't handle to do it in hardware)...

Lots of OpenGL stuff works perfectly, though. :-)

Watch Windows-demos in Windows! I tried a few, and they all seem to work...

otoh, watching linux-demos in windows...

scali: I tried a lot of them, and most of them seemed to crash right away. Might have something to do that the Windows box has no 3D accelerator ;-)

ryg: It's actually viewable on my Athlon XP 1700+ :-P (The problem appears to be lack of render-to-texture support in nVidia's Linux drivers, thus the fallback to software... funny, though, I didn't know there was render-to-texture in fr-08...)

To be honest, I've not seen a Linux demo worth watching yet...
So I don't see why you would even want to go to Linux, and use a buggy emulator and flaky drivers, hoping that you can watch some Windows demos...?

I've seen State Of Mind, didn't like it personally...
Didn't consider it a Linux demo... as I saw it on Windows... and there was a DOS version too.

Haven't seen Groovy and Hard Rox...
But apparently they're old, software-rendered, and also available for DOS... probably nothing I haven't seen before.

So I still don't see a reason to go Linux, even if they would be worth watching, sorry.

by the way, why say "linux demo" and "windows demo" ? it's all the same ! same machine, same hardware ... there's no difference that could make you like one or another demo ...

now if you don't like linux, it's just your taste, but that has nothing to do with "linux demos"

I merely noted that I didn't find any demos worth watching on Linux. Especially none that I couldn't watch elsewhere either, in DOS or Windows, without any loss of quality.

I agree, that theoretically there could be good Linux demos, same machine same hardware... However, I've not seen them yet.
Actually, if you want to continue this 'same same' thing, you'll be disappointed... Windows has better support for hardware, and Windows offers Direct3D, which is simply more up-to-date than OGL (on Windows, knowing Linux, it's probably lagging behind even more, with perhaps the exception of nVidia... Do I hear specularity maps?).
So yes, there IS a difference.
And no, as usual, limits do not determine the quality of a demo. There's some great C64, Amiga and DOS demos... So yes, there could be great Linux demos.

However, again, I've not seen them yet... and if they were to arrive, chances are they will be watchable on Windows aswell.
Which still leaves me puzzled as to why people would go Linux for demos.

People go to any platform for demos because they like it somehow, because they are masochists, because they feel reacting to the common tendencies. Who cares? Use what you like and try to be open minded. Listen to what people say about other platforms, try them yourself and choose what you like better.

And don't dis anyone. I am a happy windows user, but I everyday I get more and more the feeling that I will end up with linux (or something else) with the practices Micro$oft seems to be following recently.

Well yes, everyone is free to use their platform of choice...
I was just interested in the reasons, as I don't understand why one would choose Linux as a demoplatform... I do know some reasons why I wouldn't choose it as a platform, however...
Besides, the point was running Windows demos on Linux... and what point is that? :)

I don't think I'll ever use Linux myself. At the moment, I like Windows and FreeBSD. I had nothing but bad experiences with Linux myself.
