Can't you challenge yourself just a little bit and come up with a creative solution for the audio?

... no pun intended?

2.

Although I think basically 1 but with A500 and a 286 could be a candidate too.

yeah, put an aztech sound galaxy 2 in the pc! :D
I feel that 1 and the rest are completely different categories. I don't have a real personal preference, though.

I'm voting for number 2, but what would the "1992" spec mean really. Assembly 1992 compo machine specs for Amiga and PC? Whatever they were, I couldn't find the info.

It is much easier to find working "midschool" i.e. around 1996 PC hardware than "1992" stuff. Development will be done in Dosbox anyway.

For Amiga it doesn't make a difference, both 1992 and 1996 machines are easily available. But I'm not really thinking about Amiga now.

Many groups have their old dos demoengines still in working condition, but most of them are made for at least pentium and gus in mind. Second option has lower treshold than the third one and it would bring more prods to the compo, and isn't that the most important thing? 3rd means that most of the groups have to start everything from the scratch = less prods.

2 + gus, but i probably won't made a contribution (lack of time etc.)

yes yes, i have made recent dos stuff on real p200mmx so not all coders etc. will use dosbox ;)

this poll seems to be an awesome way to start the vote counting even before the compo begins :)

marlowe/wormsbiysk: you don't need to state "+GUS" for option 2, it's already stated there. the discussion is exclusively about option 3

I think it'd been much easier to phrase it this way:

1. No Amiga
2. No C64
3. No PC

Gargaj, but third option allows you to have a VGA+486 at 50Mhz but with crappy sound(SB Pro?). But that would make the compo unbalanced when you have C64, Amiga 500 and 486 in the same compo, because it's hard to compare how good a C64 effect ( and style ) is compared to PC effect especially for Assembly's audience.

Now unfortunate that we can not have all the compos(1k, 4k, 64k, demo, wild, 8-bit, OCS and pentium/aga/falcon/ps1 compos) we want but there's simply not enough interested people to make stuff to all of them and I suppose there is not enough time at the party place to make that many compos happen.

There's way lot more C64 and Speccy demos being released overall in the world than any other old platform demos. So C64 and Speccy scenes are doing damn fine compared to other old platforms. I think most of us can agree that not enough Amiga, classic PC or Falcon releases are being made, yet there are fairly decent development software and knowledge for them. To add to that some sceners have their amiga and dos demo engines saved. If I understand correctly the hope is having a fairly even platforms in the compo might spark some interest in people to make something for the compo. I'd be intrigued to code a 486(or Pentium) demo regardless is it the option one or two but the second option would make it ton more interesting thus I'd put way more effort in.

To me releasing in the wild compo is not really an option since it seems the more strange display and platform(sorry sooda) you have better ensures you higher position regardless how much code, music or graphics you put in it, also there's still the problem of judging how good is an GBA demo effect compared to a MSX demo effect especially when most of the viewers don't have no idea how MSX or GBA hardware works.

There might be someone thinking is there then a party in Finland were I could release my VIC-20, ZX Spectrum or MSX demo and have somewhat comparable competition, well atleast Simulaatio had a oldschool demo compo last year, so Simulaatio might have one again(?).

Maybe there should be a survey for which older platform are people most likely to do a demo?
