I have this crazy idea...

What about Metaverse like virtual world as our social network?
I mean something like Second Life but with ability to run demo-scripts in rooms...
For example my avatar will enter my fav demogroup room and see rotating stuff from my fav demo... I will meet my fav artists... Etc...
Plus with ability play music in rooms... Maybe from playlist as in room radio plus also from live source for live acts... Chipmusicians will play their sets and gigs in nice places...
Imagine huge highrise for demoscene pixel art gallery... With each floor for one artist...
Or imagine TRON like city... Maybe with voting system. And huge stadium with really huge size of screen...
Maybe with some rooms for demogames something like in TRON was...
Image virtual planets representing demogroups or something like that...
Best will it be decentralized P2P... Every sceners PC / MAC will be like 100m2 of land...
Plus some nonstop servers each gb and core will be 500m2 of land...

Imagine virtual demoscene currency VDC. I will go to virtual demoparty and buy tickets for 5VDC... I will earn some money from my chipmusic gigs in my condo...

I can imagine virtual properties,islands,space land deeds... Or Elysium space stations...

With PvP zones with looting some VDC. FPS shooter or another demogames...

With Demoscene Museum and Demoscene Cinema.
Groups, Pages, Education - Universities (classes of how to code, make music etc).

I mean we need something like that not 2D is...

And with Smart Contact Lenses and Argumented Reality in future such network will be stunning...

Maybe I am futurist... Yes. But VR/Metaverse is next big thing... Something like internet was in 90s...

I can do only 3D / CAD models... And some music... Small software team needs like 30 millions to MMO / metaverse. But when we will unite in this idea as community...

We will have best coders, 3D/2D artists, musicians in the world...

And Demoscene throught Demoscene will become one of most influential subculture and artistic movement ever...

Virtual reality universes: everybody wants to build them, nobody wants to hang around in them.

If it's supposed to be just like Second Life, except identical, then why not just use second life? You can be bored there just as nicely as you can be bored in what you are proposing.

matejeusk: I think many people already thought along this lines, so I did many years ago. It was like 2006-2008 thing. People were crazy about similar ideas, 3d experiences with avatars, 3d chats, 3d file browsers, etc... and some actual projects got funded, i.e. Croquet and many more...

I believe the basic idea was to introduce a virtual world as a user interface/browser. So, you would have multiple applications (interactive) or demos (non-interactive) in the same universe/space accessible just by "walking there".

But as I also made at a time few experiments myself, I quickly realized it is a little bit hard to actually browse a lot of content this way. It might be fun for a small scale though.

You will still have the same problems to solve like in a standard 2d metaverse (aka browser): how to incorporate/manage history of browsing? how to quickly search for apps/demos? how to display search results? etc... etc... The thing you do it in 3d space even in VR doesn't really make it easier and usually it even kills ergonomy/efficiency (at least in what I saw so far).

In conclusion: I'm not saying "no", but I think it is worth to learn from the past failures ; P

well... if you wanna do that correct then demos and sound need to be volumetric and 3d too. or the verse is not worth it. just a layer of faked reality where you look at another screen. ofc the actual internet allows todo whatever you want. just decouple the layers and you have a 3d-able design. choose your background. add gimmicks.

I, as well, remember this 3d frenzy back in 2006 - 2008. even large companies like nvidia had started developing their own 3d OS. of course, all this was later proven completely pointless since 3d solved none of the problems already existing in 2d.

Funny, I've also been thinking about a vaguely similar idea recently. Only that the virtual environment in my idea would be more like IRC or BBS (i.e., not as spatial as in mainstream games) and that the environment would be quite thoroughly code-centric (i.e. not a mere scripting extension to an engine). One of my major inspirations has been the "IRC warrior scene" of the nineties, but the environment would provide a much more diverse and constructive ways to express one's technical and creative talent. I haven't implemented anything of this yet, since I still have some design decisions to make.
