does ZX Spectrum platform needs to be subdivided?

category: general [glöplog]
If you want 1992, it won't include Pentagon+AY that appeared in 1993. The original 1991' Pentagon has no sound chip.

There was another division, based on compatibility (48, 128/Pentagon128, ATM2, Enhanced), and it was agreed upon (including sq and diver), but it was not done. I wonder why.
exactly what gasman said. (especially the second part)

and actually, it's rather simple - if it doesn't have a zx spectrum graphics limitations (attributes, 8x 100% coder colors + half brite, no sprites), and z80 is not running at 3.5Mhz +/- 1%, then it's not standard zx spectrum.

that's what's important from the demoscene aspect.

floppy and similar stuff are just a peripherals (and was even standard back in 80ties with +3, disciple, ...). yet, you'll get extra scenepoints for making it work at 48k with single load ;)).

I suggest a minor correction: "ZX Spectrum" is (any, original/clone) 16/48/128 + ay + (optional) tr-dos/divIDE/other disk systems.

The key point is 6912 screen and no more than 128k memory.

What do you think?

agree.

sq: That's pretty much what I said earlier - old stock ZX, peripherals notwithstanding.

Gargaj, there are actually problems with this definition, because it will split very similar demos into two different categories. The sad thing is, this has been discussed before, in this very thread, and it feels like we are back to square one.

I personally fully agree with this old post by Gasman: http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=6761&page=1#c296214

I propose this approach. Let's take most common 128k machines. Even original 128k machines are different, for example +2 and +2A. They have different timings, +2A have some additional ports, a few incompatible software are known. What do they have as common parts? Of course, 6912 bytes screen, ~3.5MHz Z80, 7ffd port. I propose to put all software that uses only this common parts into zx category. That means pentagon 128 should go to zx (only timings are different), scorpion (non-gmx, with 6912 screen, maybe no 1ffd), profi (in 6912 mode) should go to zx category. I think it's more fair than "only rubbery monsters". The year of development doesn't matter at all.

sq, it has no sense because:
1. Original Timex Sinclair 2K had extra gfx modes.
2. Most Russian factory-made clones that featured AY had more than 128K of RAM.
introspec: I think you're looking at it backwards - a demo is classified based on what it runs on, not the other way around. Pentagon demos that work correctly on a ZX128 are essentially ZX128 demos and belong in the "classic ZX" category. As far as 16/48/128 being lumped into one, yes, I know, but further granulation is a next big project for Pouet.

3. If you add +D or MB-02 or divIDE, you add extra RAM (no Beta 128 units are known outside xUSSR, the story behind it is so far unknown).
Alone_Coder, i just don't understand a word in what you are saying.

So? Timex is a Timex. It's not ZX Spectrum. It's Timex, you know.

And what? We are dividing prods here, not computers. If a prod runs only on one clone, it's not a ZX Spectrum prod. What the heck are you saying here?

Actually, i don't understand, why i am arguing here with you, becasue you have your own strong point of view and you are not going to give it up.

If we read e-zines carefully, ZX Spectrum is what it was called so in 90s, plus extra add-ons. TS-Conf is not an add-on, it can't be connected or soldered in.

As I see, all this chat by TS-Labs' team (see the nicks in his IRC channel and his forum) is just for make TS-Labs win of this division somehow. Recently he wanted his own platform (let it call "trolling" platform?).
> Timex is a Timex. It's not ZX Spectrum.
Timex Sinclair 2K is the only ZX Spectrum officially sold in USA, Poland, Argentine, and Portugal.

>If a prod runs only on one clone, it's not a ZX Spectrum prod.
Are Pentagon and GRM one clone?
Are ATM Turbo 2 and TURBO2 one clone?
Are Scorpion and KAY one clone?
Yes? No? Why?

And i fell very sorry for USA, Poland, Argentine and Portugal because of that.

I didn't catch a thing.

why Sam Coupe not a Spectrum? it has Z80 and it supports 6912 mode.

Well gentlemen, let's clarify the following thing:
In which category, let's say, pentagon 128 will be? zx spectrum or zx enhanced?
added on the 2015-07-07 18:08:10 by sq sq
at least ATM doesn't related to ones.

Seriously people: Less than 1000 units sold => Wild. Problem solved.

kb_, many thousands of Pentagons were sold. If not tens or even hundreds of thousands.

1. Alone_Coder is talking about which clone is spectrum, and which are not.
2. All others talking about which software are for spectrum, which software are not.

We can only split and categorize the software uploaded to pouet. Why talk about clones? No matter which clone less or more ZX Spectrum.

Pentagon 128 should be in ZX Spectrum. Pentevo, TS-conf, etc — in ZX Enhanced.

I'm agree with Gasman — Pentagon is not 100% compatible, but it have the same general feature set. That's the key point.
