category: general [glöplog]

Hi. Does "Best High-End Intro" mean that 4kb, 8kb and 64kb all have the same category?

You forgot about 16k and 32k. And someone might decide to do a 128k intro.

Cool will be fun to watch this on Revision :)
How did graphics and effects come in the same category?
so how do you verify if it's really the authors submitting?

I'm guessing you can submit someone else's work..?

"Secondly, many (if not most) movie, animation and music awards expect the authors (or anybody involved in the production) to submit their work for consideration as well."

The difference: The main motivation for submitting your product to such awards is gaining public awareness, so it can sell better on the market after if was nominated or even awarded: Its about advertising and making (even more) money.

This commercial motivation behind submissions does not exist in this demoscene environment.

Besides: The most prestigious commercial awards are selected via democratic vote by academy members (Oscars, Emmys, Grammys). You didnt copy that too (even tho this is so much more in the demoscene spirit). ;o)

I think using the Pouet votes for at least the nomination process in the categories would be the right choice.

Well you can, but...

Your or your demo group are the authors of this production

i assume you can indeed submit candidates from other people. in that case, it isnt that much different than the system used with the last scene.org awards either, where ppl could suggest candidates as well. any chance for a similar system for submitting via pouet? i would happily submit possible candidates but i won't do them one by one in that submission form :)

Yes they do. Dfox is writing that to the website too. We decided to cap all intros up to 64k and those exceeding that shall go to the High End Demo. Just like in competitions.

As for the special categories - that's open to everybody. You don't have to submit only your own stuff - but it's obviously possible.

Lifetime achievements are obviously selected by other means.

We are revising our language on that.

As it is not an official category, it has to be done via Special Category. If it gathers enough mass, a jury will be held.

Who would ever suggest himself for a lifetime achievement award?!

Have you ever read the Pouet BBS? I could think of several.

I like the lifetime achievement thing - its a good way of pointing out those who have and continue to contribute to the demoscene. Positive about this.

I agree with nic0 about the lifetime achievement. And that means all who agree as well should propose that as a special category. :-)

Problem with this is that Pouet != demoscene.

And in any case, we should remember that doing > discussing. I for one am very happy that people went forward and actually created new awards instead of discussing it to death on Pouet beforehand, even if that means I slightly disagree with some details. If it turns out people like the general principle, things can still be fine-tuned during the next iterations.

Kylearan: thank you :) That's exactly the plan.

"Problem with this is that Pouet != demoscene."

Oh. This community lacks "purity". I see. The demoscene gene pool has to stay pure. Pollution from "outsiders" has to be avoided. ;)

AFAIK the most popular productions on Pouet were always also the top picks of the scene.org awards. So having a look here for the nomination process makes sense.

I really like the whole award concept, even the name has its special meaning, but why should people submit their own prods? can't they be automatically chosen somehow as it was with the scene.org awards?

Please read this, it should answer your question: http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=10237&page=1#c491791

candidates for the scene.org awards were never automatically chosen. the jury did that. picking the obvious shit from top lists isnt exactly the problem here, it's picking the good shit that hasnt had the recognition on pouet despite being quite good. it were usually demos in the oldskool or technical feat/breakthrough area that were the toughest for the jury to discuss proper candidates, as well, jury members also have a life and thus havent seen bloody every demoscene release out there.

seems legit. a hybrid system could also work well, picking e.g the first five demos of demoparties happened during the last year, plus the prods submitted. still, its a good idea and even better that sb decided to put it into action. :)

Given that it was already said that the jury may pick prods on their own, this hybrid system you're talking about is practically already in place.
saga: from what i have read, no it's not. you have to submit your prod to be taken into consideration no matter what. the hybrid system i refereed to includes that the first five prods of every or at least large parties are included without submission, plus whatever has been submitted. then, both the first and the second category are taken into consideration as whole by the jury. this means that people who won at a large (or not) demoparty do not need to submit their prod for evaluation, as well, since this is done automatically.
added on the 2015-02-16 14:42:44 by Defiance Defiance
OK let's count... There were 62 demoparties in 2014 according to demoparty.net. Top 5 from each party makes 310 entries per category per party. 8 compo/prodtype related awards makes a grand total of 2480 prods to view for each jury member of the "Defiance awards".

Something tells me that D.Fox's assumption about the possibilities to find willing and capable jury members for such an undertaking may be correct after all.
