First ever Interlace on c64?

Thank you all. I only ask because there's this one Amiga demo I've been trying to track for years now. I think it may have been ECS, since I haven't found it in the AGA section, and all I remember is it had HAM images, the "bitplane" effect as you said, and a tune so mellow and slow-paced that it lasts for over ten minutes and gradually slows to a halt at the end. But I loved it so much at the time I really want to see it again. It may have been around 1993-4, but no later than Feb 1995, when I switched to PC for Doom ;)

I'd be grateful for any assistance in finding it.

anymore clues? like the content of the images?

Concerning scrolltexts with rotating chars (called snurkel scrollers), that demo came approx 1 year before darkness or silent's one: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=11285 which isn't a surprise since mmm invented a lot of scrolltexts types.

And before that, this famous one! (also a part in their Wild Copper megademo): http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=10455

I think in the technique section we should add chunky2planar and chunky2pixel, even if they aren't THAT oldshool...
added on the 2014-05-14 23:34:54 by rIO rIO
what is chunky 2 pixel ?
added on the 2014-05-15 15:04:48 by Oswald Oswald
chunky2planar followed by planar2pixel maybe?
added on the 2014-05-15 21:20:59 by baah baah
pixel is pixel, either chunky or planar, so no idea what it wants to mean. pixel2pixel ?
added on the 2014-05-16 08:15:38 by Oswald Oswald
He meant a 1*1pixel-chunky2planar most likely.
Opacity is quite an effect for oldschool platforms: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=2612 http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=5721. Might be included in the list?
Transparency is a better word because there is no alpha channel.
What happened to this list? The links are not working anymore :-(
Does anyone in here have a working link?

bitflippr: they seemed to stop hosting my old homepage so it was gone from there.
yes, its here. I've also updated it.

Big thanks rudi! Great list.

bitflippr: No problem, and thanks for the feedback. The list would not have been as comprehensive without the people i've greeted.

The list of demoeffects first-appearance - lacks alot of info. People can still contribute/improve on it, just write on this thread and ill add it to the list.

The first one i saw was by Jan Vlietinck/BASS on Acorn Archimedes. I made one too. And i've seen one in an old c64 demo.

Alone_Coder: umm, homework not done correctly...

Fractal zooming was first on Amiga. In Bananamen, AFAIK.

DYCP was surely first on C64. Hell, C64 had screw scrollers in 1987...

Texture mapping came first on Amiga in 1990 AFAIK. Your Sanity demo is from 1993...

Rubberizing anything isn't dependent on what actual effect is in the buffer, so the effect you should be looking for is the first rubber effect. Rubberized x isn't effect x.

Dexion made a Star Wars scroller on Amiga Dec 1989. I remember seeing a Star Wars scroller on Atari ST as well, so better check that too.

Which brings up a point. Almost any effect is possible on the humblest of platforms if you disregard framerate/size/quality.

I see C2P as not an effect in itself but a way of making the real effect possible. For example, an 80x64px raycast in the middle of the screen running at 10 fps might not be that impressive. 4x4 chunky and it's fullscreen and is an effect! With the added gain of avoiding planar addressing. In the $180 demo, 4x4 chunky is used to show a 256x256px (educated guess) pic in true 12-bit RGB color. The same picture could only be shown with edge artifacts in HAM mode otherwise.

I added the platforms to claims. World first on Spectrum or C64 is a kind of world first too. Please don't skip them for historical accuracy.

Virtual intelligence is December 1991 (the same demoparty as Voyage), not 1990.
Fractal zooming on Amiga was back in December 1992 as shown in the list.

What is should be done here is to define what an "oldschool effect" is. Is it any effect that appeared before Crystal Dream 2 or Second Reality? Or is it one-frame effect for retro hardware limitations? Or is it any effect done not pixel-after-pixel?
Bitmapped Box was actually from Elylium by Sanity (april 1991) http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=1505 not Interference ofcourse.
