Thought I'd open up a bbs thread for Demosplash. It's coming up real soon now.

As before, we are gathering a huge collection of retro platforms, as well as a modern PC, and will be playing demos live! And we're also holding some cool talks, featuring: a presentation and concert by Chicago-based chip tune musician Diode Milliampere, and a discussion of how CMUCC members helped to recover digital artworks by Andy Warhol.

I live in Lancaster, PA and want to go but I am unsure if I will be able to attend. That's like a 5 hour drive for me and i dont know if I can spend the gas money and the attendance right now to get out there, but next year for sure!

Submitted now. Sorry for the delay, things have been a bit crazy with the aftermath of the party (clean-up, organizers from out of town getting back to their respective homes, catching up on sleep, etc.)

For the modern demo category, we wanted to give special mention to pluto00987 for his entry "Trippy." Unfortunately he lost the compo to a 1k DOS demo by only one point. This was a great demo, a first try, and an on-site entry from a U.S. scener. We, the organizers, think he should have won, but we're not willing to overrule our attendees and fudge the results. So to recognize a great first entry, we're presenting pluto00987 with the "Organizers' Choice" award that will come with at least a trophy, and maybe some cash too if we have any left over after paying the bills.

nice little party :) watched the stream (amongst other streams) the whole time. I enjoyed the andy warhol thing, that was really interesting.

why this limitation need?

just a blind guess, but probably a flash cart limitation, as they want to run in on the real hardware, not the emulator?

Precisely. That's the limit of what the VecMulti multicart we have can do. We could explore lifting this restriction but in that case we'd probably have to require entrants to physically ship us a cartridge or something. For that matter, we'd love to screen lineart by Metalvotze at some point as part of our classic demo screening but it looks like we will actually have to build a ROM cartridge to implement their 4x 32k banks and switching logic. We still need to spend some time staring at 6809 assembly to figure out how that works - it's on my list of stuff to do, maybe next year. We've built a cartridge for our own Vectrex prod, but since that's only 64k we could just use a 2764 EPROM.

I totally support the decision that release for old/exotic hardware should actually runs on that hardware. especially if we're talking about a release that participating in a compo.

e.g. somewhere last year, i've got the Everdrive flash cart for NES. it's not cheap and has a highest support rate of the NES games (most mappers supported). filled it up with NES demos from pouet, only to discover that small amount of them runs of the real NES. (usually the ones that looks lame or are really simple). tried several NES consoles - europe a, europe b and usa, without any luck. of course, all of the problematic prods runs on emulator. complete disappointment. not to mention that some of them even placed quite good on some parties.

so, if you really want vectrex release that uses 4TB, make a hardware cart for it, make sure that it actually work, and show up at the party with it to show your release.

Yeah, I think we would count a retro demo that wouldn't actually run on hardware as a wild video or modern demo that just happens to use an emulator as part of its code :-P

We shipped a very heavy Apple Lisa all the way from Pittsburgh to Helsinki for Assembly 2 years ago to show that our demo ran on hardware. I even offered to open the Lisa up and show people that it really was mostly stock hardware. We built our own sound card, but even though it was constructed with many modern parts, it would have been feasible to build such a thing in the late 80s. Yes, DVI did not exist in 1983, but the purpose of our video hackery endeavors is not to give capabilities to a machine that it wouldn't originally have, but just so we can make the best quality demo captures possible.

I remember that, and totally support and respect every single thing that you did with your iLisa release. (especially as one of the rare owners of Lisa in europe. ;)) )
