(Ex-)Demosceners in Academia
category: residue [glöplog]
I've been wondering who in academia is an ex-member of the demoscener. The reason is, first of all, that Niklas Beisert (pascal) has recently been awarded a physics prize, and secondly, I've read about another German physicist who is supposed to be one of the top ten researchers worldwide. His homepage does not contain any demos, but several quite interesting programs (involving 3D graphics) which he wrote in the early 1990s using Turbo Pascal and Assembler, and this makes me think that he at least was aware of the demoscene in those days, if not even active himself.
Is my impression correct that apart from computer science, physics and perhaps mathematics are the two main subjects that attract (ex-)demosceners? I recall räd-äd of purge, for instance, wrote some years ago that he also became a physicist. Also, is it perhaps like that those who want to pursue research rather tend to study physics or maybe mathematics, while computer science is more often the choice for people who want to work in the industry?

not being seriously serious, but... fuck you @adok and your high education bullshit threads again and again and again.

lol
yumeji: you know you don't have to actually click the thread when you're not interested in it right?
Oh well...
many sceners in academia prefer to keep these two things separately.
the academics in the scene do not post on pouet either
and that claim is evidence-based!
evidence being right in this thread, correct!

As if being in the scene was something you would have to be ashamed of!
no being harassed by diploma fetishists is something to be ashamed of!
if you don't feel ashamed, you are not in the scene
Then I am not in the scene.
bye!
Wouldn't it be awesome if he really, I mean REALLY meant it this time? It would be a reason less to feel ashamed about!
Adok, you're right about räd-äd. I met him every now and then when we both studied physics in Heidelberg. Later i had the chance to be a co-founder for a spin off company of the university and still prefer working there instead of academic world. But that's just a matter of taste, of course.
what about ex-academia in the demoscene?
If anyone is in doubt I am pretty much in academia. I am in doubt whether I can be considered an ex-scener though, since that would imply I was ever a real scener. And I have been called a lamer too many times to take that title lightly. My academic credentials are slightly more well-established though, even if being a phd-student is a bit like being the texture-cut-up bitch in a great group.
Quiet guys! Let's allow adok to sublime into academia and become ex-demoscene in peace....
Remind me again of Adoks academic credentials as well as his scene ones? I have the kind of mind that forget minor facts.

Professor Leonid Hurwicz was famous Russian demoscener known as Leo. There still should be some of his prods floating around pouet, search under: Леони́д Гу́рвич
