Question/suggestion by a non-scener forum newbie... flame away!

category: general [glöplog]
Hello sceners, I've been following your work for over a decade now. Even though I never had the time/skills/talent to contribute to the making of a production, I fully enjoy downloading and watching demos, and feel the need to "stay in touch" with the current direction the demoscene is heading into. That's why I've been lurking Pouet for years, reading these forums and enjoying your witty comments and very accurate criticism about each production.

The thing is, I've noted that lately there are increasingly lots of Pouet's inside jokes and obscure comments I'm not getting at all, maybe for not attending demoparties, or not knowing sceners "in real life".

Right now I feel completely alienated by most of your posts and production reviews, not getting at all several catchphrases, such as "we have (x) that can beat your (x)" or the very popular "BASS", just to mention two examples I can think of quickly.

Here, at last, comes my question. Is this how you want Pouet to function? If this is what Pouet is intended to be, a meeting point for only the most hardcore demosceners throwing inside jokes at each other... then you're doing a great job. Please disregard this post and feel free to ruin the thread by posting images of naked gay men.

However, if you'd like to make this community more "newbie friendly", I'd like to make a suggestion: create some sort of Pouet dictionary/encyclopedia, explaining everything that someone new to Pouet (but NOT new to the scene) may not understand. Those who frequent the Something Awful forums (I think Wayfinder is one of them) may think of this as their SAclopedia, to which all users can contribute so that newbies don't stay out of the loop.

That's pretty much it. Thank you and let the flaming begin.
This will answer at least a small bit of your post:

I can agree with you, for the most part, but I don't feel that pouet has to be representative of demoscene in general. It's a website, and all websites have regulars and inside humor. As far as general immaturity goes, you're unfortunately right :( But the BBS is sort of useless anyway, the main part of Pouet is the productions. For serious demoscene discussion, there may be other places (though I have no idea where).

The we have X that can beat your X is a reference to http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12029

Where BASS came from, I have no idea and would like to know myself :p

Preacher: exactly, Pouet doesn't have to be representative of the demoscene in general, that's why I'm not suggesting you create a "demoscene encyclopedia" (I think Wikipedia may take care of that one). Instead I'd like to have some kind of Pouet guide to help me understand these forums inside jokes and references.

Thanks for the links thom and uns3en.
Good post, Lester. Maybe the FAQ should contain a little more info about such stuff ? (maybe it does, I never read it)
"a meeting point for only the most hardcore demosceners" <- pouet is not scene

we don't "want" pouet "to be" anything. we just use its features, some of us work on keeping the database in tact, others just want to flame around, others just want to watch and comment on productions. pouet has no guidelines or anything. i don't think many people feel like putting a dictionary like that together. possibly since virtually all inside jokes refer to certain demos ('lobstertainment' starting the whole lobster thing, winnerdemo doing the we have computers which can beat your computers, etc etc).

ohyeah, about the BASS, i've no clue either. truck, elaborate please!

sir RICHARD kbab: you make an excellent point, but sometimes it happens the other way around; demos may also contain references to events in Pouet forums (for example, the Optimus reference in Cafre by Stravaganza).
Optimus is a special case ;)

understandfing scene doesn't equal understanding pouet. i wouldn't put it so drasticly as xenusion, but all in all, just dont care for all that indier-joke crap and all that! it's not even worth a thread, and especially not a wiki. you should care for sCENE and not for stupid pouet trends. i don't know either what the heck is with that BASS but i don't care. i rather care to gather all kind of scene productions inside here for giving people the broadest possible picture about what was and is scene. pouet insider-jokes certainly do take the lowest point in scene heritage.

indier=insider

I don't agree. Insider jokes = elite culture.
i'm with dip on this one. leave some of the stuff up to the mystique. :)

if pouet was your only view on the scene, it'd be a bad view indeed.

i think part of the fun when i was "outsiding the scene" was researching most of the references :) (AUTOOO)

i think this thread is a message that we all should take pouet a tad more serious. if it has taken a role of "first window" inside the scene, then we should handle it appropriate to that, namely with a bit more seriosity.

That I can agree with, dips :)
BASS!!!!!

dipswitch and Dominei: thank you, that's exactly my point, although I wouldn't say "take it more seriously", just make it easier for newcomers to "catch up".

Thank you all for the input, and for sparing me from the flame so far :)

PS: Good one, Okkie.
what's there to flame you on? you asked a question about our hobby (obsession). so we answered :)

dude, there is NOTHING TO CATCH UP!.. pouet isn't what scene is about. scene is about releasing, competition, tradition, techniques, aesthetics... sure it's also about insider humour, but before you urge yourself to catch up on stupid "bass" jokes, you should rather catch up on scene history and structures.

i don't want newcomers who feel themselves as sceners just because they can joke around. i want newcomers who are productive and dedicated.
