Ludum Dare
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Maybe somebody is interested: An instance of the Ludum Dare contest series is running right now. The theme is evolution. You have 48 hours (actually from now only a bit more than 37 hours) to create a game that is somehow related to that theme.

So where's the "notch is doing a 2d game in java" stream this time? ;)
Don't think Notch is participating this time.
From what I heard, last time when he streamed, he had tens of thousands of viewers, which started to cost him a *lot* of money.
So that may be the reason.

Here's my submission: <link>
Nah, the reason is that he's not in the mood this time and/or has no idea for a game. And the money thing was because IIRC he used a pay-for-traffic service before he switched over to twitch.tv. Also, he has more money than God, so that's not really an issue anyway. ;)
I had my first attempted at Ludum Daring. It's crappy I know, didn't spend all my hours coding, got tired and from Saturday 6 hours long and walked outside the next day in the city instead :). And then Monday in the Jam straight five hours to finalize something that at least is somehow playable.

p.s. I am curious if a similar concept for demos would work. Or is this partycoding already?

more like fast-compos (sometimes called surprise-compos, etc.), which is obviously a platform for them who like to get stuff done in short amounts of time. while that is partycoding also, yes.
Nice game, Optimus!
I didn't participate this time. But who knows, maybe next time :)

I was in too : [urlhttp://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-27/?action=preview&uid=25221[/url], a bit better than minesweeper this time, but it'll improve!
I wanted to participate too, but sadly this Ludum Dare interfered with VR Jam that I was also in.
If we can boil down to what was (somewhat) finished this weekend, here's my very short game for 3-week long vrjam. It's even somewhat demoscene-related as it uses distance fields and sphere tracing as core tech.

w23: that's really cool.. although i can only imagine the nausea it must induce with an oculus :D The bouncing around is mental. Nice rendering technique though.
IMHO game development is creative, fun and a good programming exercise. I think the demoscene should be more tolerant towards game developers (I recall several games were deleted from pouet in the past because they were considered not related to the scene, although the creator of the game was a pouet.net user).
but you have to draw a line between being a website for demoscene productions and being the next repository for free indie games.
Maali has a good point
i thought so. *thread closed*

Yeah, this is a site for demos. Games submitted to the gamedev compo at a demo party kind of belong here, just about, but that has to be the limit. Otherwise where does it end? I mean, I write stuff that's realtime with cool graphics but totally isn't a demo (or a game), and I'm a scener. That stuff doesn't belong here.
Now, where's that "block lamer" button?

Seeing that you have to be logged in to submit a production I wonder whether there is an argument hidden here. Probably not.
shut the fuck up bombe

close it already.
I have a new computer game idea. What do you think about it?
The objective is to color as many graphs as possible during a time limit of 10 minutes. The color is selected with the keyboard (1, 2, 3, 4). Since the graphs are always planar, four colors will always suffice. You click the nodes to color with the left mouse button. You can color each node only once. If you make a mistake (i.e. two adjacent nodes get the same color), you lose. The more graphs you manage to color within the time limit, the higher your final score.

It ends where someone is mistaking pouet for an indie or shareware games platform, which it isn't. By your strict rules my latest thing or this or that wouldn't belong, since they're not strictly gamedev-compo-at-scene-event type prods, but more scene prods "in spirit" from people who didn't just create an account yesterday to promote their latest DLC-laden pile of ego-shooter dunk. Same for other things people create and don't end up in a demo competition. So, you have to be more careful and look at those things in a case-by-case manner. Deleting something is easy and can be done quickly anyway. :)
