About the elections (again), by Michael Moore

come on amusic. dying is in their fucking job description. if you don't want to go to war, don't become a soldier. it's not like anyone forced them.

USA should have just nuked the worst parts of Iraq with hydrogen bombs. No US soldier would have died then.

Skrebbel: dying defending their country, yes (although I still see that stupid)... dying because of economic strategies to earn EVEN MORE money for their president... naw

jcl, these are paid professional soldiers. they sure as hell knew what the chose for when they got that job.

plus, i don't believe in your little conspiracy theory. even if oil may be a reason, it surely is not the reason.

RICHARD: The problem is that most of them become soldiers because they cannot find any other job in the states. The army promises them glory and fame with shiny commercials so they do the only thing they can. Most of those soldiers didn't know or expect they would eventually end up serving on foreign soil. Fahrenheit 911 explains all that with good detail.

Zplex: I really hope you are joking. To put it in terms you would possibly understand, most of the world doesn't see U.S. very favourably right now. The minute someone drops a nuke somewhere, it will become _alot_ easier for everyone else to do the same. And "everyone else" is:
France
Britain
Russia
China
India
Pakistan
Israel

Others who possibly have nukes:
North Korea
Former Soviet countries (some fuel/weapons is missing since the USSR break-up)
Japan can have them if they choose to do so in a couple of months.

Do you still think that would be a nice idea?

moT:
I, as a German, feel deceived and dishonoured, because you only list Japan as a bad WWII nation, which is not allowed to have a-bombs,
but has the ability to produce a-bombs within a few months.
Additionally we have access to a few a-bombs that were left as cold war relicts by the USA.
Please, correct that within 2 hours or we'll nuke Greece.
And we'll end all diplomatic connections.
Sincerely,
lousy soul.

Ahaha! It could be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous. Sadly Germany doesn't have the cojones for a war anymore, they definitely need to get rid of that treehugging government...

lousy soul: If I need to clarify this very much to avoid misunderstanding, so be it:

Japan does not have any nuclear weapons right now, not because it is forbidden, but because Japan on its own chooses not to. However, Japan is very technologically advanced in nuclear physics, has an active nuclear program, great experience, resources and several power plants. It is believed, therefore, that Japan can produce nuclear weapons if they choose to do so, in a very short amount of time, because of the aforementioned capabilities.

I hope it is all clear now.

Any industrialized nation can produce nuclear weapons on a few years notice. They're really not that complicated, the only really hard part is to get the fissionable material.
added on the 2004-11-06 23:05:37 by Preacher Preacher
Despite the current treehugger gourvernment in germany, the country does still have vast amounts of nuclear scientists, fissionable material and companies at its disposal. Siemens is one of the bigger nuclear power plant contractors. Many of the smaller nuclear powers got their purification equipment from german companies, etc etc..

Something to think about:

The largest uranium producers of the world Production (tonnes U)

1946-1992
total

USA 339.290
CANADA 257.692
GERMANY (East) 217.791
SOUTH AFRICA 143.302
CZECHOSLOVAKIA 102.245

CZECHOSLOVAKIA DOESNT EVEN EXIST ANYMORE, DUDE YOUR STATS ARE AS LOST AS THE GRANNY YOU FUCKED LAST NIGHT!
LOST=OLD, forgive me, too much beer atm :D
UH.. CAN YOU EVEN READ? THAT IS DURING THE COLD WAR TIME, URANIUM MINING DECREASED RAPIDLY AFTER 1992.

please tell your TREEHUGGING GOVERNMENT that the PAKI BOMB BUILDER (MR. KHAN) stole most of his knowledge in ALMELO (OF ALL F@#KING PLACES)

(so yeah, PHEAR THE DUTCH, for we have all the required knowledge AND a flaky rightwing government...)

stelthz: Your statistic rocks, I knew the small GDR was once the 3rd biggest Uranium miner but I didn't knew how many was mined (and brought to the USSR). Seeing there the CS(S/F)R as no 5 lets me assume both countries took it from the Ore Mountains which are on their border.

Anyway, with that much nuclear power here in Europe I don't feel safer than without.
havoc: You are aware that URENCO is a BRITISH-GERMAN-DUTCH consortium?
added on the 2004-11-07 10:30:01 by Stelthzje Stelthzje
MM: Yes, the ore mountains are a "pluton", really really old mountains. That is why they contain a lot of heavy metals and very rare minerals. There should also be a repository of uranium in bavaria, but apparently public protests hindered large scale mining there. People in the GDR of course had no option, and the USSR got most of their uranium from there and czechoslovakia. Now the former mining sites are burned earth and cost billions to renaturate.

The situation is a bit ironic, because germany is one of the few countries in europe which would have sufficient native uranium supplies for nuclear power generation. For example france is not even able to provide a fraction of their needs from native resources. But anways, canadian and south african uranium is still cheaper.

what's URENCO?

havoc, wow. in almelo is altijd wat te doen :)

NUTELLA!
URENCO is an international consortium which deals with the mining and trading of natural Uranium. Much like OPEC deals with oil.

witeshade, while I don't think Moore's selective usage of facts is particularly nice, keep in mind that such slanted carefully chosen messages are the bread and butter of conservative/reactionary groups in the US. They rehash old suspicious arguments all the TIME.

URENCO -> URanium ENrichment COmpany
It's a company that produces enriched uranium in so-called ultracentrifuges, they sell their product to nuclear powerplants around the world. As such it's more similar to a SHELL or BP refinery in the oil market than it would be to OPEC (whose 'equivalent', if any, would probably be IAEA).

Yeah, I am aware it's an international consortium. It'd be pretty hard for me not to take notice of that fact as I'm living like right between two of their facilities, one in 'metropolis' Almelo and the other just across the border in Gronau. But the point was that this is nothing to be proud of...

If one can steal most of the knowledge needed to build a nuke in Almelo, there probably wasn't a lot to steal to begin with. There's a famous song about Almelo which I'll be happy to translate to the consortium's other two languages:

Het stoplicht staat op rood
(Das Ampel steht auf rot)/(The trafficlight is on red)
Het stoplicht staat op groen
(Das Ampel steht auf gruen)/(The trafficlight is on green)
In Almelo is altijd wat te doen
(In Almelo gibt's immer was zu tun)/(There's always something going on in Almelo)
