UKscene Christmas Party 2012

category: parties [glöplog]
More information on Facebook.

Join the UKscene for a great night of partying and remembering Meaty. Meaty would have turned 36 on December 6th, so this party is to honor that as well. Sorry that it collides with Silly Venture 2k12, but this date has a special meaning.

Time: Saturday, December 8th, 2012 at 6:00 pm
Place: London, United Kingdom (exact venue to be announced later)

Welcome!

Another party event based around Giles and his funeral hasn't even happened yet. I speak for myself when I say I'd prefer that these things were done after the funeral and also if they are done with Giles in mind would it not be just in good taste to run it by his closest scene friends, ie dvs, ne7, velo and cryptic?

A party is the last thing on my mind, one step at a time is what I'm thinking. I understand the motivation though and will probably attend.

ruairi: This isn't going to be an actual memorial party, since that's for only family and closest friends. We're not trying to violate that.

This is supposed to be a Christmas party, which was arranged by Meaty in the previous years, and a light-hearted attempt to gather all the UKsceners + friends together to have a party.

I don't want this to turn into a disagreement about "I was closer friend to him than you were", I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes. I just want to gather all the people together and have a good party.

I've learned from rc55 that announcing the party at this point, even before the funeral, was considered to be bad timing and therefore offending.

I want to say I'm sorry if I offended someone by bringing up this idea of having a party so early. Only reason for announcing it well in advance was to give foreigners (like myself) to have time to book flights with decent prices, since we want to join the party as well.

I do agree I could have waited few weeks with this to let some time pass.

My apologies.

@jenni so that means i can't mourn meaty with you, iam thinking of extending my vacation just to annoy you
bittin: We'll send you a plush toy and a bottle of Minttu in advance before you fly to UK so you can have your own party!

(Also - this is not a memorial party, as said before. You need to go somewhere else to mourn, we're thinking of having a party.)

Well, I for one fully support this. Obviously, I'm not wanting to suggest that there's a right or wrong way to react to the loss of Meaty.

But, regardless of whether we actually refer to this event (or others) as a tribute to Meaty, I think the best possible tribute we can pay is to follow his lead and get off our asses, make great things happen, and continue his efforts to keep community ties strong.

(And, at risk of sounding morbid, for me the last few days have been a stark reminder of the fact that we're all only on this planet for a limited time… I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling that way, and I hope that the biggest thing we can take out of that is a renewed desire to make the most of the time we do have, not put stuff off for another day.)

with the greatest respect to everyone at this time, when many of us are finding it hard and probably want to _do something_ to feel better about things - i really think the organising of the uk scene xmas party needs to be led by the uk scene itself, when the time is right and with dates and arrangements agreed before announcing.

I for one would very much like to attend this party or whatever party in honor of Giles.

I do respect the wishes of his closest family and friends regarding services and due process, but on the same time I would like to know about this sort of thing in advance. As Jenni pointed out, flighttickets need to be reserved asap for those who wish to attend from abroad. Flights from Helsinki to London are currently around 350e and they surely will not get any cheaper.

Gasman and I share the two points that he made. Me must not dwell in misery, but instead keep on going forward and make most of what you can in the little time you have.

Giles would enjoy this party, so should we.

smash: good point, although i hope that this doesn't escalate in some pseudo-scene-political "it's OUR job to do it" crap. I think the date is great and wether the scandinavians or the UK initiated it doesn't really matter - what does matter is that there's an ongoing effort to help people heal.

So, if the uk people were planning something like this anyway - please come forward and start planning so we can all book our tickets and pay our respect to Giles.

Would it make smash feel better if said that leblane took over the arrangements? Last time I checked, he still had a British passport...

Also, what D.Fox said - if you have better ideas, then come forward. I didn't come up with this idea by myself - people were talking on #ukscene about the Christmas party, and there was collective thinking that the tradition should go on. Therefore I took the first step.

I understand Ruairi's annoyment about announcing the plans in a vulnerable time, but they had justified reason (foreigners being able to join in as well). We will anyways need the help of people living in London to do some on-site organizing, so it's not just that "us foreigners" will storm UK and take over everything. This will be still be UKscene party - people want to see it happening, so I think we should all work in co-operation and not have a quarrel over who has "more right" to do things than someone else.

The only real christmas party is tUM, anyway. No other partys are allowed to be called "christmas party".
The way I see it, foreigners (including jenni, T-101) just want to know if it's a good idea to book flight tickets for that date (while they're still a bit cheaper, maybe).

No less, no more. :)

Since it may not be so obvious for anyone not following along on Facebook:

Please hold off on booking plane tickets and stuff for now, and await further announcements.

That is all.

Chiming in with ruari and reed on this one. I'm sure this is all in good spirit, but way to chase that ambulance.

I personally would go with what Gasman said earlier. In my opinion also it is far too early to be organizing an Xmas party, even though Giles did arrange these originally.

We must respect the wishes of his family. I think something more respectful would be if the entire scene was to send flowers to his funeral or make a donation to whichever charity Giles might have supported during his life.

Hopefully, if his family choose to allow the details to be made public, a UK scener will post the funeral details and / or details of the funeral directors or charity concerned if donations are preferred rather than having flowers delivered.

This does not necessarily mean that there will be no celebration of the life of Meaty at all - I'm sure there will be something, even if it is in the early months of 2013 before Easter.

Please note that I'm just speaking for myself here and my views may not be representative of the UK scene as a whole. Besides, even if the event was to go ahead on the date as previously mentioned, CiH and I wouldn't be able to make it anyhow as we will be in Gdansk for Sillyventure 2012. Although both of us were probably just acquaintances of Giles rather than friends, we'd still like to pay our respects in some way.
