IRC... Why IRC?
category: offtopic [glöplog]
Newsgroup quality + speed used to be a big selling point for ISPs. I don't think my current ISP even has a newsgroup server. Then again I doubt they have an IRC server either... which thinking about it is good, they're now just a dumb pipe instead of trying to be like AOL.
Also ringofchump has a nice ring to it :)

addy please Garg.
Ivan - all you need to connect to nntp is a client, address and knowhow (there are hundreds of free non-binary based nntp servers out there if you know where to look - a bit like irc servers really.) - not so different when you think about it.. Different protocol, diff. software but all the same txt based fun.

Get fucked psonice ;P
Olympics tickets for anything?

irc.scene.org - as deserted as it gets, but it's there.
Thanks. Maybe we need to nominate an "official" irc server and room for when scene.org goes down?
No malice intended psonice btw (hence the ";P") - my first night on the piss in a month - that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it.

Maybe #demoscene on efnet?
Everyone's on IRCnet.
Approximatively:
IRCnet = demoscene
EFnet = w*r*z scene
IRCnet = demoscene
EFnet = w*r*z scene
Fine!
#demoscene on ircnet then!
#demoscene on ircnet then!
#revision
@ringofyre: ha sorry, it didn't gave any channel name but direction to the good ircnet network :)
so IRCnet is the best choice to find demoscene people.
and yes #revision channel is a very good start :)
then choose your favorite people, do a "whois" on him to know what channel he is currently on :)

What wullon said. EFnet #scenesat is also pretty active.
There is a list of IRC channels that are related to the demoscene, most of them on IRCnet.

Please tell me if there are any channels that should be added to, or removed from, this list.

adok resurrected from his grave.
Adok: so, you're seriously claiming that you receive change requests for that webpage?
For just a single example, #assembly has been !assembly for maybe 10+ years already.

and some corrections to adok's list have already been posted around a year ago... http://pouet.net/topic.php?which=8192&page=1
would you please remove the most active german channel from that list? it's set +s (secret) for reasons.

That's not very good for outreach las! How will people now find the demoscene and become the next Navismashydexoticornosfexocet! (this game is p hard)
I've discovered in recent years that both IRC service and newsgroups (via UK servers) appears to have died a death. Not sure if this is down to the UK tabloid press claims about chatrooms (unfortunately tarring IRC with the same brush) but it is rather worrying.
I've been using Dutch IRC servers in recent times because of this. It'll be interesting to see how long they keep going for and accepting connections.
As far as newsgroups go, Google have text-based groups pretty much sewn up, so no need to install software to read these any more. For binaries though, the professional providers, such as Newshosting, are the way to go.

okkie: For outreach we have nice demoscene outreach events. If you get invited at a demoparty to join a channel that's a way more cool thing then seeing a list from adok and joining random channels for the lulz - isn't it? It also gives you the nice feeling of "being respected enough to be invited".
IRC also keeps the fuck you and that's important.

Because IRC is what has been used since the late 1990's as a demoscene chat, and no other thing has been chosen as a replacement. It's just there. It works. What else?
mIRC master race reporting in.
