breaking news: 64k category killed, dancers happy

category: parties [glöplog]
that said, the 64K compo at Revision had some decent entries, I think.

So the category is NOT DEAD!
The oldskool platform rules make no sense. I desperately want to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe that there was a good reason for making that change, but the only reasons I can think of all boil down to "oldskool platforms are a PITA to deal with, and we want to discourage them". The presence of the real wild compo suggests that, in principle, they're still able to deal with whatever weird and wonderful hardware we bring them, but this move seems to imply that they'd rather not have to.

It's a fair point that those compos haven't been well represented in recent years, but ditching and degrading compos means we're effectively abandoning all hope that they'll recover - and 64K activity in particular has always gone in peaks and troughs. Kudos to Abyss and all the other Assembly orgas who have kept the scene element of the party alive and kicking for all this time - without their efforts, it would have gone the way of The Party and Dreamhack a decade ago - but to me it does feel like these changes might be the beginning of the end. For the wider demoscene, it's no big deal - there are more than enough parties to pick up the releases that are diveted away from Assembly (let's make sure the compos at Evoke are freaking awesome, mmkay?), but it's still sad to see it happen. Just a sign of the times, I guess...

I've never been to assembly, and now I never will. I can not forgive them for the death of the 64k compo.

This is a conspiracy carried out by ISPs and hard drive manufacturers.

nitro: But YouTube videos of 64ks and Demos don't make much of a difference in size!

after revision's successful 64k compo it's just plain stupid to do a move like that, but i guess it is yet another gamer's party...

deal with it: 4k is the new 64k and 1k is the new 4k!

this change may not be permanent, you know.

If people make enough noise, or enter 64Ks in the demo compo, or something, maybe they'll change their minds for next year.

No reason to give up hope.

They have tried tool kickstart the 64k compo.for years, without any luck
they cancel the compo >> people enter 64k in the demo compo to protest >> they can have a proper 64k compo

clever

While it's definately sad, we must face the fact, that 64k's are FUCKING hard. Even with tools assisting us in creating content, it's still a huge amount of going into each release. I can't speak for anyone else, but 1-2 releases per group per year is probably what one could expect. With Revision probably recieving one of each entries per group, there's really not that many releases left to be distributed across all the other parties.

To me, the 64k compo has always been the flagship of all demoscene compos. With a total of 30-40 PC 64k intros being release each year, I think it's quite obvious, that there's simply not enough entries to go round for all parties to host a 64k intro competition. A compo being cancelled every now and then is inevidable, but allows for other compos to recieve more entries.

not every 64kb has to be The Product.

Following up on Punqtured comments, I found interesting to see that prizes weren't really on par with the difficulty inherent to the category.

Anyway, Assembly's move is sad but understandable. Let's just release at real demoparties, which in return will provide more awesomeness during the compos. :-)

By the way, whoever is going to get the Best 64k Scene.org Award (ahem, not like we have no clue who this would be :) ) has a great opportunity to speak for the 64k community who apparently wasn't welcomed.
