Yeah, the party indeed was great. Unfortunately there’s something that sticks out like a sore thumb… The oldskool gfx competition. My brother Slayer made an awesome picture called “Train to Nowhere” that received an overwhelming applause and the audience seemed to be really carried away with it. We all were very happy and expected the top 3. But very next morning some good people have started to ask my bro what the hell has happened to his picture as it suddenly disappeared from the voting system and they can’t vote for it. The orgs explained that ”Train to Nowhere” was disqualified because it was ALLEGEDLY the same picture that Slayer showed at Riverwash 2011 party. Yeah, someone has told them so and they haven’t even checked it, because they were too busy or tired and just removed the picture. Simple as that. With no word. Without even trying to talk to Slayer before! And they ofcourse were wrong. “Train to Nowhere" is a handmade pixelled version of his truecolor graphics that won Riwerwash 2011 newschool gfx compo. The pixel version took him about 100 hours to complete and he was really proud with how it turned out. From a technical standpoint it’s a completely different image. When he explained it to them they said that it was probably (PROBABLY!) just automatically converted to 32 colors and therefore it should be removed either. Then Slayer asked them to compare both images, to carefully examine the pixel structure, to enlarge it and to see added steps and all the changes etc. After few hours he was told that he was right. They said they were very very sorry about it. But the image was unfortunately removed permanently from the voting system and can not be restored… They have said it might be possible to add it back to the system, but they have to check some technical issues first. The time was passing by… After some time, when most of the people had already voted, they brought the picture back, but all the earlier votes were reset. The orgs didn’t even inform the people about the situation so they had no idea that they have to vote for this picture again. And the image itself is just awesome. It should be taken into consideration that even after reseting the votes it ended up at 4th place! I really think the orgs should clarify the issue to the public at the prize-giving ceremony or at least tell what exactly has happened.

jazzcat, that sounds like a shitty situation indeed. i do honestly wonder, however, what's up with the steps included with those releases. without any further explanation, the steps would lead me to assume the low colour version was drawn from scratch. but seeing the riverwash picture, that would make no sense at all and spending 100 hours for what essentially boils down to a conversion (by hand) seems rather far fetched. so what's the deal there, why was there no mention of the riverwash picture in the revision release file? or am i overlooking something?

Jazzcat : We did check the picture, actually. And not just a single orga but at least 3 or even maybe 4. Looking at the workstages we went with "if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck" principle here and took the picture out of the voting system based on what we saw and what we had at that time, being the included working stages - the initial first stage being the line art that matched the Riverwash picture very very tightly and additional workstages looked as toned-down photoshop versions of the Riverwash pictures.

Also we re-added the picture to the voting system as soon as we talked to Slayer and we knew we could technically do it (read : close voting on the oldskool compo and re-open it without breaking actual stuff - this caused the results folder in the background to be recopied and this would then re-sync every X minutes with the FTP folder as well)

Also the votes were not reset - just the picture re-added. Probably (as Rowley indicates) a small note in the way of "oldskool version of the riverwash entry" would have helped both parties here. The more info we get as organizer the best we can make a decision when something like this pops up.

In summary : The picture wasnt pulled out of voting without looking at it by a single organizer - yes this turned out to be incorrect and we are *very* sorry for that, again a bit more initial info might have prevented this. And no the votes were not reset, the compo team does not have access to the vote database/listing (and we dont want that, either).

Franky - Revision Compo Team.

I understand that to some people it may seem bizarre (but who of us sceners is not like that a bit?) but I like to do sometimes a pixelled versions of my painted/truecolor works. Just to play a little with the pixel technique that I love - for fun. Its like the musicians doing sometimes the chip/synth versions of their mp3 songs.

So yes, maybe I made a mistake, that I haven't wrote that the image of Revision is a pixel version of the work from Riwerwash - but for me - graphic artist, the pixel/8bit gfx and truecolor gfx are just two different worlds.

The matter was cleared up, but in my opinion it was not right - and many others ppl at the party agreed with this - that my work was removed (after showing it in the competition) without even informing me of this fact. Also my work was excluded from the voting system for many hours, and later appeared, without any comment.

We can not turn back time, but lets think what to do to avoid such situations in the future. In summary, to learn from this unfortunate event, we should clarify the gfx compo rules? Maybe may it clear: are there / or there are not allowed in the oldschool compo, the pixel version / variation of artist own truecolor works?
And the most important: in contentious issues, the organizers should contact the author of work before they remove it from the comopo (especially when the work already was shown at the compo and "disappear" later).

Gotta agree with slayer here. It's impossible to undo the damage caused by a premature disqualification. It would have been much more sensible to try and contact him if there were doubts as to the originality of his work. It's not like it would have been difficult to get in contact, since you had a message system in the www.party-server itself. You could have asked for him on the big screen or by speaker as you did for other people whose demos weren't working. Even if you could not gotten a hold of him, the voting still could have gone through. A possible disqualification afterwards is not as bad as a premature false disqualification. Innocent until proven guilty should be the principle here. Ok, this is a not life or death-situation, but I can understand the disappointment of your work being disregarded so quickly.

The outside beer stand overcharged me 2 euros, so I stopped buying from them the whole weekend and will not buy from them in 2013.

M0d, that zolo video is awesome. When you're brockin out on bass lines its easy to forget the creative talent behind the scene (sorry for the pun)! Big up the orga crew once again.

As soon as we would receive billions of Dollars (and Euros) from all around the world to provide an excellent stream whithout the need to pay too much to the content creators (at least that’s how the Olympic games come to the TV-set in your living room), we would probably loose our focus in organizing one of the best demoparties and move it over to provide a reliable stream. But as long as we don’t earn money by organizing demoparties, we do it for the fun – which is still the main motivation in doing demoparties. Having a working stream is a nifty bonus, but it doesn’t add anything for our (or at least my) personal enjoyment.

Oh one small thing that pops up in my mind: was it true that an increase in lines of text on the beamslide, ment a decrease in fontsize or was that just the alcohol making it harder to see? I was under the impression that one or two rows of text were more clearly visible, but it could have just been tiredness/booze.

Yes, the coffee was amazing. I had the requirement of tripple espresso shots with tonnes of sugar to ward off a couple of hypoglycemia crashes. Tasty, and great pick-me-ups. Again, highly appreciated as i don't like instant coffee at all. Dem pods was noice!

Actually he also tried to convince me that he didn't have any Captain Morgan, until I pointed at the bloody bottle right behind him. It almost seemed like my money wasn't good enough for him :)

The only thing which could be improved were the food stands - from my perspective the quality decreased this year (beside the variety - we really need a döner again)
