open source pouet
category: residue [glöplog]
so what's stopping pouet.net from going open source asap Gargaj?
i wouldn't mind contributing again and i'm pretty sure we have a swooping quantity of other folks who would jump into that bandwagon once it's up on github or something.

i heard the demozoo is still looking for helping hands :)

honestly, mostly it's what you and analogue left over. pouet needs a rehauled robust, scalable, expandable codebase (without portuguese/french variable names and being scattered into a thousand files and EVERYTHING inlined and copypasted) and a considerably revamped database (without columns named as "quand" and "which" and that fucking 30 column prods table) to work. the first step for this was overhauling SceneID with dfox (thanks mate, you da money) which pouet way too heavily relies on. i'll continue pouet2 after revision when i dont have demos to make.
So it's too messed up now and the new stuff is still in its infancy. Bummer.
Some of us could've helped tidying up

You're lucky it wasn't a spanish guy coding... :P

word.
"pouet2" was in the works for about..... how many, 5 years?
and pouet's design is so 2000...
maybe it would be a good idea:
- to opensource "pouet2", so others could help gargaj
- to work on a new design with a small group of coders/web designers
but I've already spoken years ago about the topic, and maybe most of the sceners think that "pouet is good as it is".
So, stick with it..... and go make a demo about it.

friol: yes, we could add some nice ads to support it...
I think what Gargaj is saying isn't "I don't want help", but "I just need to get it untangled first, and that's best done by a focused few".
in all honesty, and based on what i've seen and heard over the years - it's really not worth it to try to untangle the mess that is pouet. it really really needs a completely new codebase, and proper database design.
i'd aim for cooperation with demozoo though. not sure what their goal is, and what the goal of pouet2 is, but i've got the impression they're working hard behind the scenes.

Hey maali i think we have a vacuum cleaner like that at work :D
maybe you should get your work involved in this!
What if... whoever does a new pouët first wins?

if pouet2 goes opensource, all poarties must have a "pouet dev compo" and the sitewill go skyrocket.
thanks to gargaj

Yes, like all open source software, this too will be a gigantic success. :)
A venture from which you'll all profit massively.
what rasmus said
I actually really like the pouet-2000 oldskool design...
You could try putting the code up on github and let people refactor like crazy - the proper design will eventually emerge
tjoppen, nonsense. people will just implement the features they want, badly, and then complain on the bbs when their pull request is rejected.
I just like to see this shit fixed. :)
