The Gathering 2011

category: parties [glöplog]
Question: Is there somewhere a list of the compos planned at the gathering? If I come and present something, that would definitely be oldschool (either Atari or Oric), and obviously if there's no such compo I'm not going to bother doing anything :)

Dbug: not 100% done yet, will be announced shortly. There will definitely be a compo where you can enter demos for weird old computers, but I'm not so sure if there will be an exclusive compo for such demos.

Am I the only one seeing some nasty conspiracy here or are only germans complaining about an Easter demo party that is not being held in Germany.

lug00ber: I don't mind competing in the same category as other more powerful machines as long as I'm part of the compo and shown on screen like the others.

I'm not making demos to win compos, I'm just making them because I enjoy making them and that showing them on the big screen is just the big final :)

Dbug: that sounds about right to me :)

Personally I'm making demos to fill up Pouët's database harddisks.

(I stopped when I realized the plan was futile.)

Sesse: it's not impossible, but I do expect you have to pick up your pace a bit :)

waffle: there's no conspiracy. If The Gathering was the biggest and pure demoscene party in Europe I would be in. But I rather go to smaller parties like Buenzli when it's sure that there're no gamers involved.

i don't get this; why couldn't a combined party be "the biggest demo scene party in the world"?

For all I know, both TG and ASM er pretty big.
Sesse: You only need to make a demo that create new entries in pouet using the user credentials :)

I thought there already was some prod that up-thumbed itself when you ran it :-)

benJam: Why does it have to be "pure demoscene"? Even tho I'm probably far less gamer than average scener I still much enjoy assembly/boozembly which is a non pure demoscene party.

Buenzli has a poker tournament! Does not compute!
:D
There mere posibility to win over a few to become sceners are probably worth it. My colleagues at work sometimes teases me when we're having group-meetings, saying: "Ah, you're meeting with 'the sect' again", and to be honest, I find this strangely true. Let's face it - we often say we want more newcomers to join us, but at the same time, we totally dismiss the group of young blood, that already have an interest in computers and every now and then actually contribute to the activities in which they take part. While aggressive counterstrikers still roam, I see an interesting shift in gaming-industry to actually endorse creativity and allow for players to contribute to the very games they play.

We all took very uneasy steps towards becoming the sceners we are today with a feeling we're the group of people who are closest to take over world domination, but come on - there's got to be room for displaying our work to a wider ordience to provide inspiration and encouragement.

isn't it called the demoscene? or is it called the demomood?
"I'm in the demomood today... let's watch a demo..."

Actually no - I haven't talked to any Swede who'd rather go to TG than the Breakpoint replacement party. I think what you're doing at TG regarding outreach is cool though, just a shame you have to have it on the same dates as the One Major demo party in the world. Oh well, I'm sure we'll all be able to cope in the end.

Or perhaps “it's a shame people still make other parties overlapping TG, which has been at the same dates since 1992”? :-)

No need to start up that discussion again. There were good reasons for the demoscene exodus from TG in the late nineties, and there are obvious reasons why TG won't change dates :)

Skrebbel, you have such a juicy center of win, it hurts.

Also, I'm getting tired of people slamming TG in favor of a wholly unproven, prenatal party that we're in no way supposed to consider a clone of Breakpoint. Trip off the pedestal already, you hypocrites. I hope you sprain something in the fall.

The competition list for The Gathering 2011 is now ready:

http://www.gathering.org/tg11/en/creative/competitions/

Detailed rules and descriptions will follow, but you may start your compilers now, if you haven't allready :) Prizes will be announced a bit later, but they will be fair and generous as usual.

Demoscene (aka "Creative") tickets are for sale in an unlimited amount. We have had an all-time record number of creative tickets sold for this time of year, meaning we are looking forward to a kickass party with lots of old and new sceners!

Nice that you have a gamedev compo. It would also be cool to have an Assembler size optimizing compo.

The compo machine(s) final spec is not ready yet, but it will be something along these lines.
* SM4.0 graphics card

Huh? I thought we were in 2011, and SM5.0 became available in 2009...
(And both my WIPs are requiring that)

You can always bring your own card ;)

Uhm, yeah. SM5.0 support would be expected in 2011...
