leia, you misunderstand. i am one of the people who say i wont go to TG.. but i dont hate the event. i think its actually great that someone steps and takes responsibilty to keep the awards alive. and TG should be able to attract much more exposure to the outside world compared to a _real scene party_

and leia, you know me.. do you really need to ask why i go to solskogen, kindergarden.. and not to TG? no need to get all defensive about the non-alcohol policy. thats just how it is. when i go to a party.. i like having a few beers. that goes for any party by the way.

Leijaa: Not me, however being completely banned from evening eating a cognac cheese the night before I arrive is a bit sucky. However, if it was a good demoscene party, it wouldn't make the slightest difference for me :p Call it 20%? I'm sure if we could figure out what else TG has going for it (apart from being close to Denmark), then we would flock to the party.

By the way, I wholeheartedly agree with xrs, that it's great that TG is doing it's best.

I don't concider TG because of the many gamers relative to the scene which is there... for the same reason I dropped assembly.. when people went outside instead I didn't feel like going.. even tho I do appreciate a beer or two, I'm really a nerd inside... I wanna code! And I don't want to pay ridiculous amount of money to do so, which you need to do at the gamer events. I'd just rather go to kindergarden, solskogen, compusphere or outline.. etc etc...

And props to TG for hosting the scene.org awards.

Just for the record, there are plenty of folks going to TG who are neither sceners OR gamers. Some of them even do *gasp* creative shit *without* any scene ties what-so-ever! :p

I understand the reluctance to go to a gamer party, but people should at least acknowledge the fact that there are actually people in between, and they probably outweigh, by far, the "pro gamers" there.

When I was last there ('07 I think?) at least, there were a significant amount of people fooling around in Photoshop or 3d studio outside the scene area.

why would you want to code at a party? isn't it something you can do at home, as opposed to, say, socializing with friends and tasty foreign beverages?

... and partycoding to finish a production for a compo doesn't count. i doubt anyone WANTS to do that.

earlier years it was to learn from others.. many of the people I knew at parties didn't use internet that often (lol, those were the days) and nowadays I just get good inspiration having other people around me doing the same thing.

I've never been to TG but for what it's worth I never saw it as a gamer party. Nor do I view Assembly as such... I guess it's in the eye of the beholder...

If there is no "replacement BP" and there was a bar kind of thing at TG. I would probably go.

One solution would be to rent a typical football-bar or simular thing in Hamar, and arrange "demobeer" there before and after the scene awards, and the compo night(s). (eks. hydranten.net )

I think maybe it could be a nice way to recruit some of theese people wb mentioned. Run demoscene slides on the big screen "Visit the local TG BAR at....blablabla" Most people are more open to new this with some beers in them ;) And having a bar, you limit some of the total wastedness.
(Except for us stinking rich bitches working in the oil bidnezz)

Interesting thread. I really don't know much about TG except it's a big LAN party with some scene presence, some praiseworthy scene outreach efforts and a general alcohol ban. Doesn't really sound interesting to me (been bored shitless at one no-alcohol-allowed LAN party too many), but I really think it's great that at least some sceners go there, for the outreach, and I guess in some ways I wish I could still enjoy such events like I did when I was 16.

As Chucky said, in Sweden we have Dreamhack still somehow pretending to be a demo party. Any other party is at least 1000x better than that, so I think people are overreacting - it could've been a lot worse. If you've got the means and are one of those godlike beings that are able to have fun without alcohol, then I encourage you to go to TG 2011 and have a great time. I won't, because I can't have fun without booze, and that's my prerogative.

Partially agreeing with reed - not much point in going to a party just to sit in front of your computer being asocial. I've had some great coding sessions at parties though, making something in a few hours just for fun, trying to beat the deadline. Can be a really awesome experience if your group members are there working with you as well. The effort makes the beer taste even better when you're done.

Renting Hydranten should be no issue at all, and it's actually a pretty good idea. It's quite spacey, and run by students (it's hamars student pub) so it's pretty laid back. Cheap too. And it might even be possible to get the local college involved in covering some of the (potential) costs.

But it's a 15-20min walk from the ship. Though, everything is a 15-20min walk from there, so I guess that doesn't really matter. :P

The most ideal would be to set up some large beer tents at the far end of the parking lot, but I somehow doupt the orgas want it there. :P

I say: Bring in Darklite's bar-mobile and we're all set to go! ;-)

leia: if I had the money, I would even go to TG for the awards and then fly to Germany for XYZ (Gloom already named the Breakpoint susbtitute).

having said that, I probably won't have enough money to do that, and if I had to choose between a party with gamers, alcohol ban, friggin cold outside and everything being bloody expensive and a party with 100% scene spirit, able to drink while watching a compo, ok-ish weather and all my scene friends there... you know the answer.

furthermore, I think it's great that the scene.org awards travel around demoparties. I say, next year do it in another party, and so on. Just like the MTV awards!! I'd love to have the scene.org awards over here in Portugal, during <insert the party name I want to organize next year> 2011.
