68K Mac demos and emulation
category: general [glöplog]
I am trying to get some old 68k and PPC Mac demos running. So far I managed to get the Basilisk II emu working as a Quadra 650. It boots System 7, but I can't run anything I downloaded from Pouet, because if I uncompress them with StuffIt (regardless of the version) the executable file is always 0 bytes in any of them. Other files like readme's and modules uncompress OK.
See for example these:
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=1800
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=24593
http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=6980
A solution, anyone?

Maybe The Unarchiver can uncompress it?
Well, a lot of progz can uncompress it, but why the executable is always 0 byte? Will try, thanks...
there might be some incompatiblity in the windows version of stuffit.
On Os X -at least erotomania - uncompresses correctly...

Ah, now I got it. StuffIt on Mac uncompresses correctly. But when I copy them into the emulator's virtual HD, executables get 0 bytes long.
I am using HFVExplorer on WinXP. It offers a lot of file copy methods (BinHex, Mac binary, etc) but neither works.

Perhaps there is something stored in the resource fork, that isn't uncompressed?
If I try uncompressing the above prods I get 0 bytes as well on my mac (osx 10.6). Dunno.

Now I can uncompress them on the Mac, but I still get 0 bytes on Win. Furthermore if I copied the extracted files from the Mac to the VMware Windows, it also becomes 0 bytes. Weird! And what is even more funny, if I copy the hard disk file from the Windows Basilisk to the Mac, it won't work with the Mac Basilisk.
Actually what is a resource fork?

The mac68k scene is non existent :(
Another cool Intro-Effect is at the beginning of this game:

Files on mac are weird. There isn't a single stream of bytes, but multiple ones. The resource fork is a second, separate stream, invisible to regular file manipulation methods. As a result, it cannot be stored on usual filesystems.
I recommend getting a version of stuffit on your emulated mac and extracting files there, so all the file data and metadata is preserved. You will probably need to get stuffit as a disk image so that itself doesn't lose its resource fork. Now have fun figuring out a way to get stuffit expander in your emulated mac, including its resurce fork!

.bin is binary format
try HFV explorer for copy to HDD image, install StuffIt, have fun

thanks to drzeissler for wasting the above posters' time by necroing this thread \o/
perhaps we could help people see when something is ooooold
You think that would've helped? :)
Gargaj: I’ll answer that in 9 years :)
