Amiga X1000 is useless?

category: general [glöplog]
charged question, no?

Actually, I like the idea of a new Amiga, but I also don't see much the point, and neither other people that I know...

So, what do you think about Amiga X1000?

I secretly want it, I hope it's not just a motherboard like the amiga boards out there, I want it to have the mockup case on wikipedia ;_;

The case on wikipedia is not a mockup. It is a custom case (I saw already the site of the case manufacturer, they sell a case like that to the general public, but without the logo...)

Also it will have custom keyboard, mouse, etc... And it will ship with the newest AmigaOS4 also it will ship with all drivers (I mean: instead of you having to hack lots of stuff, it will be like a Mac, custom hardware, custom OS, work flawlessy...)

The video is ATI, after a time cursing, I found a place where a person from the company says that the reason is that nVidia do not cooperated much, not releasing a driver, and not giving info to allow a drive to be made... :/

Maybe if the machine get popular (AmigaOS4 right now is being worked to support PCI-e) then people will want to buy nVidia cards for it, and nVidia will make a driver for it (hopefully, awesome as the Linux one, that actually beats the crap of the windows version sometimes)

Broken English is not an excuse for lack of links, sanity or a combination of either.

Now about sanity, I cannot do much...

The thing is, to be honest, the prices are way too high.

I mean, as the guy said, the X1000 is designed for power users, "beginners" should get the Sam440, thing is, a full system costs about 1000$, so the X1000 should be at least 1500$ I THINK. Considering the specs and the fact that you're probably gonna get compatibility issues with non-AmigaOS users (99%+) makes it wayyyyy less appealing.

I never touched, or even saw, Amiga OS 4.1, is it really THAT great so I could justify buying a 1000$ (relatively crappy) PC just for it?

That is exactly my question, is that thing actually usefull to be worth it? I never used AmigaOS (any of them...) too.

In fact, I never saw any amiga machine in person...

So, I am wondering if that thing is worth the price.

Although I still want one, is more for its novel factor...

yes, me too. I'm intrigued ._.

Would be great if we could get an old mac (G4-G5) and install AmigaOS. Because there is no way you're gonna expand your user base with a 1000$+ PC built exclusively for a SMALL OS.

A 64bits dual core 1.8 Ghz PowerPC sounds nice, but for it's price you can buy a super awesome mega computer capable of running FLT's ASD'10 demo at at least 4 fps!

I can imagine the ads. "Do you think a Mac is too cheap for what you get? Buy an Amiga."

For 1500$, you can get an i7 930 with 6GBs of DDR3 (not DDR2), with like at least a 280GTX

according to this xena is more then just a strap-on. Good to know

does it run ms office or adobe photoshop? otherwise it'll fail :-)
lol...

I don't use either MS Office or Adobe Photoshop :P

And because the price (here everyone use pirated stuff... to use MS Office would be easy, but I found that Open Office has some features that MS Office don't, and I needed those features...)

Anyway, before the thread derails...

Someone has any idea of what to do with that Xena and Xorro thing? Maybe this would drive the sales...

(Average)Mac users are too brainwashed by Apple to ever consider buying it.
PC-Windows users who never used anything else but Windoz dont see the point to buy it.
So we're left with the "has-beens", "current Amiga Users" & "OS and HW Fans".
I hope it will succeed. And with Google takin ova with online apps and whatnot, It could actually survive as long as its become friends with Google ;)

powerpc? that means they can't even port wine --> fail.

or: hooray, another BeBox!

It is probably useless to most people. I would love to have one, but I can't afford it. Good job I already have an AmigaOne at least.

BTW, for those curious about OS4, this thread may help.

It actually looks pretty cool. If I had unlimited time and money I'd buy one for sure.. unfortunately I have limited amounts of both and need a computer that's actually useful :)

They're definitely going for the hobbyist market rather than mainstream, I guess that's OK but it's kind of a pity since the market looks much more open to newcomers now. Guess the competition is way too tough.

I don't understand why putting a $10-microcontroller on a mainboard makes it somehow special. If you want to play around with that XMOS chip, they sell devkits for around $100-150. And apart from that... it's just yet another PPC board, like the AmigaONE or Sam.

I don't want to talk it down and I wish them luck with it, but I don't see the market.

AAAAAAmmmmmmiiiiiiiiggggggaaaaaa!

A bit useless but still is ok.

I guess they eventually will be able to put in the Minimig firmware into the Xena chip. Together with some sort of IO card in the Xorro port you would in theory be able to get hardware support for playing old amiga games.... or something...

I think the Natami project is a more interesting concept... I much rather have a A1200 compatible system to replace my dying Classic Amiga pile with....

It sounds like a crappy Xbox, I fail to see the appeal :/

zmurf: The minimig is implemented in an FPGA, the XMOS chip is a microcontroller.

Humm, for PowerPC homebrew development for consoles the X1000 might be a good idea if you want to optimize some PPC code in a PPC OS environment, but don't see much other use since other Natami and AROS(very fast on mid x86 computers) are developing fast.
