Interactive fiction discussion

What do you think about socalled "interactive fiction" - basically oldschool text adventures in the like of Zork and The Pawn.

I consider trying my hands on a simple one but it would be pointless if people just don't want to play something like this anymore.

Any opinions?
Just do it. Opinions are irrelevant.

Making a game like that is more about writing skill than anything else. If I was you, I'd do it in my native language, or not at all.

Hmm... Sounds interesting.

Anyway I'm with havoc here: Writing the plot is the key for the game's success. Use a language that you understand and know pretty well...

there are still sites online with periodic competitions for new interactive fiction. some people do play and some people still make them.

jscott has made a documentary about it. it's called "get lamp". you should get it.

there are even editors, compilers and players for interactive fiction formats even. you should get your hands on zoom or whatever its called.

had my head wrapped around getting a javascript port of one of those for website usage the other day, but didnt find a solution for that.

There are a number of interpreter options for different platforms. As far as I know all modern games are written in Inform (current version is 7).

Here are some resources.

This is a newsgroup:

This is a documentary about IF site which has lots of useful links:
http://www.getlamp.com/links/

This site has a general introduction and a link to some games playable online:
http://pr-if.org/

There is IF in various languages I believe, although I only know about English and French.
Oh, this brings memories of my first programs. And my first script system ;>

Oh, I failed to mention I don't enjoy such games too much - serious ones, at least.

Thanks for the comments sofar!

I am aware that there are powerful special languages and interpreters available. On the other hand I would like to get some experience to make my own, or at least a small framework.

One major issue should be to make it accessible on various platforms.

For a start I'd simply expand on an old existing game, basically rewrite and enhance it.

I'm still thinking about the whole thing. Maybe i need a few more days to think about it.
I actually started something now but it will not be a big thing. But if this little project works outok, i might try my hands on something larger later.
