keyboards for coders

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Herpes, nice one :D
Hmm, das Keyboard would go fairly well with my computer setup (which is also all black with a blue led on the screen), think I'll grab it for christmas.

Thec, how loud are the keys? Does the different key weights feel feel natural?
after this one was broken

yeah that one is good. i like the separate apple keyboard too though (not the small one, the full width thing).

I also have the Logitech one. UltraX it's called. Has lasted many years now.

I moved from a nice old (80s) clicky HP keyboard to this apple one after the ancient one broke down.
Unlike the laptop versions, this one is actually really nice: pleasant resistance and recuperation (is that even what you'd call it? Feels so strange to describe a keyboard's behavior so in-depth :p )
And of course it has two usb ports for extra goodness.

bdk/superplek: are you serious ? I had that KB once before and it sucked (broke after a couple of months of intense hacking)

I just ordered me a BB Image
let's see if it is worth that 30 bucks..

..typing this on my RS6000 (which has so far not failed me)

surprised as I was, I kind of like the standalone apple keyboard too

the keyboard is definitely apple's best product. but their mouse must be the worst mouse i have ever used.

I have a Model-M like clone thing by dell. It works.

The IBM Model-M #1391401 was the greatest keyboard ever made. All other keyboards have only attempted to emulate it's greatness. They run about $20-$30 (U.S) used on Ebay. I keep a stockpile of them. And when the zombie apocalypse begins, they're sturdy enough to be used as bludgeoning weapons.

I like the apple keyboard too.. it has its shortcomings, but it's great to type on. I'm interested to hear if that cherry one is good.. they made some good keyboards in the past, but I've seen some very cheap + nasty cherry ones here at work recently (generic $3 keyboards).

src: you mean the new magic mouse or the older ones? I've found their keyboards + mice alike.. the current generation ones are great, the older ones at best meh.

And yeah.. keyboards with a proper click. I miss them.

graga: das keyboard has individual cherry keyswitches so it's pretty fucking loud to the point where my typing pisses off my housemate.

However you can put a rubber mat under it and the noise is much reduced. It's an awesome keyboard. The blank one is the way forward.

Should point out I have an older version than the slab of pure sexiness on the previous page - newer ones may be quieter.

WinKey + M: Minimizes all windows. Handy for emergency situations.

okaj, so get this. i was at the library yesterday, and had to use one of the computers. it had an late 90's style keyboard so nothing special. but then i started typing on it, and it felt so weird, so amazing, so alive... it didn't really felt like i was pressing keys (they didn't make the rattleing sound a keyboard normally makes also) but it felt more like i was pressing peices of plastic glued on the soft skin of some big and loving animal, or boobs.

i wanted to steal the keyboard...
Does anyone have first-hand experience of those maltron single-handed keyboards? I love their looks and it would be very nice to have my left hand on the keyboard and the right one on my mouse all the time. Moving the right hand all the time is that bad.

Currently I have the cheapest logitech I could find and it works like a charm - like every single keyboard I've ever had (am I lucky or can't I just tell terrible and fabulous keyboards apart?)

Oh shiit, I should've checked their prices before asking :>

whynot2k: sounds awesome, you need to go back there and find out the manufacturer and the model.

I standardized on IBM Model M13s around 1995 and have never looked back. Don't need Windows key.
