Demoscene.TV needs you

I like Demoscene.tv so I gave them a few bucks.

To be honest, it's not nice to find that your demo was uploaded on youtube by someone else with wrong timings, re-encoded visuals and nearly destroyed music ; at least demoscene.tv has quality standards.
except that dtv has on average lower quality than recent youtube stuff (and vimeo is even better, but i'm used to youtube)... For example, i'm always shocked when dtv videos has extremely low volume, which happens quite often. Also, preloading is either nonexisting or sucks, anyway i can't watch demos on it without random pauses.
That said, i would be sad if it disappeared; but i think if capped can manage it with basically zero budget, then dtv can probably survive too with less than 50000 euros... (also, get fundraising protips from a certain "ascii historian")
(the iphone pricing system i don't really understand - does the app costs money? or the app is free and content costs money? or what? - but i don't approve that either)
http://demoscene.tv/page.php?id=172&lang=uk&vsmaction=view_prod&id_prod=13817 This prod doesn't seems legal, all gfxs are ripped from a commercial movie. It should be removed from DTV imho.
I like DTV too, I think they did great thinks (party reports, live stream, documentaries, pushing up the video capture thing, Numerica demoparties...).
But I also second blala (and others), nowadays, DTV is not the best place anymore to watch quickly demo videos with a decent quality stream.
Like rc55 (and others), I think DTV should focus on everything (a nice website, mobile stuff, aggregation of contents, reports, live stream, documentaries, outreach, ...) BUT the actual demo capture/encoding/hosting, and maybe collaborate with capped (or set up a nice youtube/vimeo account), in order to avoid spending a lot of money in bandwith/hosting (when you can have for exemple a vimeo+ account for 60$/year) and provide a better service overall?
Or am I missing something?
It's really sad that you lost your sponsor, but you can't come and say "hey, we need 50k€, kthxbye". I think you have to tell more and show that you are trying also on your side to reduce the costs, finding solutions, etc... to keep dtv alive even in a reduced state. I'm sure you are, but the 50k€ figure you put in the first post is quite frightening.
Anyway, long live Demoscene.tv!

Don't get me wrong...
I won't say "Use Youtube and stfu"...
I just tried to show other ways to stay alive... I don't know where demoscene.tv host the stuff... I know for example www.server4you.de as hostingservice with a real full traffic flatrate... Most hosters advertise with "traffic flat" but after arriving 500GB you have to pay for each GB... So what is 500GB traffic when you have videos online with 600MB and more... 100 viewers and you have already 60GB traffic used.
Just read the rules of server4you .. its maybe an option to host demoscene.tv on a full traffic flat server which cost a fix price in month and nothing more.
Finaly i agree with wullon. You should give more information about your trouble cauz it seems that i'm not alone with thinking: "wtf. 50k for what?" ... Thats the reason why i thought it could a trafficproblem with the hosters but maybe i'm wrong...

I find it interesting that a fulltime dtv employee can't find the time to comment in this thread nor answer his email :)

Word! Neither here nor in the iPhone app thread :)
Maybe he's sunning himself at costa del sol, and rolling around in a big pile of your money! :)
bstrr leads
farfar, lollo :D
I love Demoscene.tv, but the truth is that I watch it less and less every time. Maybe because they don't show as many lives as before. How many live parties did they broadcast live this year? And I don't remember seeing any other report from them after the brilliant Breakpoint 2008 report. I used to watch all of them in the old days ;)

About the quality: there is absolutely _no way_ for a video uploaded in youtube or vimeo not to be reencoded... You actually pay "pro" accounts for having a little better re-encoding...
Think about having a jpg quality 95 and reencoding it at quality 50. Then pay for it to be reencoded at quality 80.
Or having a 320kbps mp3 and reencoding it at 128 kbps. It's morally ugly, reencoding is only there for some compatibility and extorting money.
As an example, watch Stargazer in HD on youtube and Stargzer on demoscene.tv (but hey don't forget to click "watch HD").
Both the visuals and music are more crisp and clear with DTV. Because they don't reencode shit.
Also: capped.tv has 700 videos wher demoscene.tv has 700 channels... maybe it's not the same charge for the servers.
What about hosting it at scene.org?
scene.org staff is not quite looking for extra responsibilities, afaik

Also: the budget is 0 (correct me if i'm wrong), not 50000 euros. I'm saying there must be a solution somewhere between the two.
As for stargazer on youtube/dtv: I personally don't really care about this amount of quality difference. Clearly, neither is an IMAX. Video streaming today is about "easy", not about "quality". And if I want better videos, I can usually still download the video files. Also, I said "on average", which may or may be not true, but a single example does not help much.

Ok.

Ok, I just wanted to point out the methods of youtube and vimeo.
As more and more people don't/can't watch the real thing, quality of capture is quite critical imho.
Finally got a reply on my email! Woohoo! :D
Out of office / auto reply? :)
I guess to get a feedback from the D.TV guys you have to use their forum section for the app:

In Sovjet Russia, DTV pays you!

Yes, because eeeeveryone uses that :) (I didn't even know there was one). Anyway: if you (DTV) start a topic on Pouet begging for money, it is sort of in your interest to pay attention to what's being said in that topic. If you just ignore it because you don't like it, well..I guess to get a feedback from the D.TV guys you have to use their forum section for the app:
so in the end it boils down to this:
- youtube is free, quality is inferior
- dtv offers ace quality, but can the cash be raised?
people should really just stop getting into all these discussions about the morality of fundraising and whining about the budgets and whatnot.
if you want dtv, donate. sure, dtv must come up with a reasonable overview of what the money will be spent on, but apart from that, if people want to donate: go right ahead. if you don't want to for whatever reason, then don't.
and my personial opinion on the matter is that i find donating to something like dtv a whole lot more sensible than that american jerk who asked for a years salary a while ago.

...but wasn't the request for dtv donations to pay for somebody's salary?
i don't really have a problem with that as long as the service provided is cool enough.
that said, big props to party organizers and for ex. slengpung people doing the work on volunteer basis and keeping it running without earning a penny.
