My motivation for weight loss was the desire to be healthy. Hips, knees, etc. Get this into your fat head. Being lighter is an empty desire. You want to be healthier, or sexier, whatever helps you.
In your food diary, log your weight, it will fluctuate day to day, morning to night, but it will go down.
Dont make weight loss your goal. You will fail and it will feel pointless, make keeping at it your goal. So make keeping the food diary your goal and ignore the weight. And as long as you keep your food diary for a week, you are already meeting goals. Weight loss is just a side effect of those. You cant conciously lose weight, making it a goal is pointless. You have no control over weight, you have control over what you eat, over how far you walk. Make things in your control your goal.
Go on a 20 minute walk every day. Good goal.
eat a piece of fruit twice a day (will totally kill hunger) good goal
lose 5 kg by xmas, Shitty shitty shitty pointless unacheivable dead end goal.

@elfh : I'm 25 and have lived this way for 7 or so years. I would feel even better if I only got off my arse and started exercising. I would thus evacuate the stress that makes me smoke, and could quit smoking...
As a rule of thumb it's usually best to lose some weight to become fit.
So, Optimus, did you start making use of any of this info so far? :)

A few hours ago I returned from a having lunch with a room full of sumo wrestlers. (A very interesting experience, to be sure... If anyone's interested, I'm willing to elaborate.) A large portion of their diet is chicken and fish and tofu, and I assure you, they possess plenty of extra padding. (And don't forget, they work out regularly.)

Indeed, sumo wrestlers will eat a lot of protein because they need a solid and muscular core, but their fat certainly comes from other sources. When body builders are bulking up, they require a fair amount of carbs with their protein sources and they too are susceptible to some fat gain. However, when they enter their cutting phase, they maintain the protein intake and just lower their carb sources or increase cardio.
I made the mistake of neglecting protein in past diets and ended up all skin and bones. Now, when I need to drop fat I eat the equivalent of 3 chicken fillets, 3 eggs, 2 cans of tuna and 2 protein shakes (1 casein and 1 whey) in an average day and I only lift weights 3-4 times per week (no more than 30 minutes per session). The protein allows me to maintain muscle mass, which is what gives me a ripped athletic look, rather than an emaciated look.

Exactly. Whenever you diet, your calorie intake will be inadequate.
When you work months to build muscle mass, you soon realise how tough it is to maintain during diets. Just ask any bodybuilder.

You're talking bullshit, and I speak as a 36 year-old who has been physically active and a healthy eater my entire life.
Oh come on, internet links? Not one of them has a picture of the author. A lot of this kind of advice is written by scrawny professors, withered “nutritionalists” or fat columnists. Personally, I don’t take diet or fitness advice from anybody unless they can back it up with physical results.

Rowley: I understand that and wouldn't want to push it on anyone, but I resent being accused of talking bullshit on a subject I'm very experienced with.
So, let's imagine that hormones can give pretty impressive results and that there are people who have evidence to back that up.. Wouldn't it make perfect sense to use them?
What if some things work slightly different on each of us? I have read a lot of suggestions on what is healthy to eat or how to keep fit and a lot of disagreements on that. And what all say is, I tried it and it worked very well on me so it must be true. I am not saying that there is no common ground here. Some basic stuff are common for most (like not eating much carbohydrates, exercising) but there might be variations on what works best on each. I say these because I have heard a lot of suggestions and disagreements in the past and I couldn't decide what is best for me.
