PARANOIA !???

category: general [glöplog]

me´s so damn sick of google.!

so my question would be like:

HOW HARD IS IT to code an own search-engine ?!!

i know one would need lots of HD-space, etc...
but as we´re the demoscene:
how hard would it be to code an own search-engine with minimum_data-exploit just based on OWN interests.!?? ( crunched data,etc... -> so also of interest == needed Harddisk-Space... )

--> no answers like: "use altavista" pleeze !
go write a demo about it

go fekk yerself !
.. ok maybe I sound like a jerk.

I guess the question would be what would you been searching for that's different? prods? groups?

sth without commercials :P

now go fekk a demo about it !
I'm sorry, that was a jerkish statement

ok...sry...i just asked about sth essential, not for sth_2_get_pouetized in under 2 minutez !
if sth is really crucial i dont want to get answers like this ^^
even if i somehow asked for it by stating "no answers like: "use altavista" pleeze !"
Ok- ok. back to the subject then:

I'm curious what you'd be searching for. I mean, would the searching engine crawl through the pouet and scene.org and whatnot archives. Perhaps it could crawl through all the sites on undergrund. What would we limit searching of to have it be scene specific?

Ok. you guys are sick. I smell it. Far beyond your imagination.

exactly !

but mustn´t be scene-specific !

sth where you put in yer interests etc
+ counting in other searches you do ( would mean a growth of DB, but as we´re demoscene anyway, just throw it away after one or two weeks of non_related_searchs )
+ maybe hacking ( dont take this too serious! ) into google/consorts to see what their most_hits_counter says... ( you can delete it afterwards directly ! )

most of my other ideas are NOT 4 public yet...i want to earn money with it lateron :P ( ofcoz not, haha j/k ! )

Assuming all the texts you want to search through are stored on your harddrive, you simply need to write a program that is able to scan these texts for strings entered by the user. There are several quite efficient text search algorithms, cf. Donald Knuth "The Art of Computer Programming", Volume 3 (Searching and Sorting).

yeah...adok´s right :/

one would need to have atleast the tags of every site that "could" hit your interests...

... so next idea would be to chekk for LINKS-Sections on Sites you visit ( its very common to call that section just "LINKS" ) ...

one would have to include some manager for HD-Space ( like a RAM-Manager ) , which decides what to delete first to make space for new input...this way even the size of DB could get managed...to avoid loosing Sites you want to have in DB forever or just even longer there could be some boxes to tick, etc...
but me´s not eebliss or adok or bits :p

but now that you said it: i´ll go and make a demo about it :/
welcome to the troll kindergarden, thanks c0c00n-shr00m

fart
If the problem is paranoia: Scroogle is a web service that disguises the Internet address of users who want to run Google searches anonymously. Scroogle also gives users the option of having all communication between their computer and the search page be SSL encrypted.

Hmm.. some kind of personal, intelligent web spider would actually rule. Point it at some central site for a subject you're interested in (say pouet or scene.org), give it a few keywords (say demo, demoscene, prod, ...) and it goes off, follows links and indexes only sites that are linked to other demo sites and seem to be relevant. You'd end up with a little search engine that's hopefully a lot more relevant, because it'd be excluding 99% of the interwebs.

Alternatively, write an app that grabs search results from google, then filters it a bit, perhaps.

@Hollowman. thanks for the link, I'm not too paranoid about google storing my search stats. But I welcome every and any chance to avoid having advertising material shoved down my throat.

A search that will just scan a selected domain... I seem to recall google had this option, but I can't seem to find it now.

But pouet.net and scene.org already have decent search engines for their content built-in. Or were you wanting to search the production comments for a string? Try typing "obnoxious comment"+pouet into google maybe. Works for me!
anakirob: try
"obnoxious comment" site:pouet.net
on google. Guess that's what you meant.

And of course, adblock/safariblock/whatever opera calls it. Remove all the annoying, flashing, distracting, irritating, cpu time wasting, laptop battery burning adverts. If it's a site you want to support, turn it off (removing what's pretty much the only source of income for a lot of sites would drive them off the net in some cases, so there are times when you should be seeing those ads :)

I wonder what bandwidth a personal search engine would consume...
added on the 2009-07-14 17:28:32 by sigflup sigflup
What you tell it to consume? You could get it to go out and follow every link as fast as it can and download all of the images so you get instant page previews and shit, or you could tell it to follow 1 link / minute and just download the base file.
