Amiga CD32

Anyone remember this console?
The reason why I made this thread is because I am looking for a video of the intro to the game called Inferno on CD32. I remember I watched it again and again at my friends place. It was just soo cool and it had nice 24-bits graphics, cant really remember how the game was, but the intro was just so stunning! I dont remember if it was rendered in realtime or if it was just a playpack recording of frames (the intro that is), i know it had an MPEG decoder in it. I just wonder if anyone has this thing and may make a video of it. I know the console is old and you most probably have dumped it many years ago, but if you happens to have it, thats really really cool.
Well, the console hit the market in 93-94 or something so its old, but it was unique. Now, there was also a game called Microcosm witch was really top-quality game for consoles at that time.

I have a CD32, but not the game
okies. :)
I have a CD32 + Microcosm but i don't have Inferno :)
I'm sure the iso is leechable somewhere, and thus the content is rippable..

keito: im looking for it as we speak :)
I must say, Microcosm was anything but "top quality". An extremely simple and not-too-playable shoot'em'up on top of some nice prerendered background graphics.. Short too, if I recall correctly.
Had a lot of fun with many other great CD32 games though :)

I think, Inferno is unreleased on the Amiga. I've read in Amiga Format and CU-Amiga an it's interesting that it was mentioned together with TFX. In some reviews are TFX-like screens and they are talking about Inferno (like in this review)
Calling the cd32 "unique" is a bit of a stretch, I think. IIRC it was basically a glorified Amiga 1200 without a keyboard (but a cd-rom drive instead) and a cheap shot to gain some leverage in the emerging 1994 next gen console market.
There are plenty of torrents with cd32 games...
And due to a lack of copy protection on the cd32 putting them on a blank cd should be no issue. And WinUAE has full cd32 support as well iirc.

tomaes: i may have exaggerated by using that word, but i was more subjective, so it doesnt matter.
pista: that is interresting

Up until recently I thought that Microcosm was a cool game based on the screen shots from the 3DO version I saw as a kid and based on the nice soundtrack. Then I saw this review by Spoony. A part of me still wish that the game would have been as cool as the first screenshots, but hey... I find the review quite funny at least ;).
oh god now i have to go and get all my Amiga Format and CU Amiga mags down and read them all again...
Any luck on the ISO find?, I have a CD32 as well. Wouldn't mind powering it up again

the game was never released and the inferno intro just existed on a cu amiga covercd.
m0d: i gave up, Inferno was hard to find. maybe ill give it a try later.
xeNusion: how cool :)

Have CD32 still here too, i have all the Amiga Format CDs and CU Amiga ones so i may be able to hunt it down if you tell me the issue/cd number.
@intrinsic omg someone else who has the AFCDs... haha awesome :) I had my really crappy mods on 2 of them when they still allowed reader submitted music (before someone went all copyright sample on their asses). AFCD 4 and 6.
Also, i was the first to win their mod of the month thingy (Amiga format were well behind CU amiga on this concept)... with the shittiest module ever conceived. Sorry about that.

In the US most people haven't even heard of the amiga cd32. How popular was this system in Europe, might I ask?
sigfap: not very popular. i think this was partly to do with the fact that at the time of its release (1993ish), nobody in Europe could seem to grasp the concept of a CD based console. besides that it became pretty clear early on that the CD32 was literally the same machine as the Amiga1200...only difference being that cd32 games (at the time) were a lot more difficult to pirate. it also had a rather useless chunky-to-planar chip (Akako, or something), which to my knowledge was never used in a single cd32 game.
it was also competing with the 3DO, which was an infinitely superior machine but failed equally (saleswise)

this thread needs a reference image :)
The CD32 is actually my main amiga - I do my protracker music with it and used it for testing Jurassic Pack. It has an expansion port which allowed to insert an mpeg-module for Video CDs and a board with standard connections like hd, serial etc. I have a CF-card adapter inside which makes it the first totally noise free computer I own since I got a 040 for my 500 back in 1993. Unfortunately, it can't have any network connections so I'm stuck with Amiga Explorer and the serial port...
Regarding the games, most releases were just A1200 games on a bootable cd. The most dissapointing release ever was Spheris Legacy CD32. When you died in the game, it asked for Disk 2, which is pretty difficult on a CD game console. :-( Microscosm on the other hand was ok in my opinion, even though it had issues after I had added some ram. At least, the CD was filled and it was CD32 only (on amiga platform). My all time favourites on my CD32 are Simon the Sorcerer (with speech) and Fire and Ice (great soundtrack).
But of course, all this is totally unrelated to the question at the beginning which I have absolutely no answer to.

hello: I remembered there was some game which actually used Akiko, and I had to check with Toni who maintains WinUAE. And yes, the conversion of Wing Commander for CD32 actually made use of the chip for c2p-stuff. I (we) don't know of any others..
As for my favourite games, I do remember spending lots of time with Captive 2: Liberation, Super Stardust and Guardian (a very overlooked one IMHO).
Also I have painful memories of the UFO: Enemy Unknown conversion being sooooooo slow.. I could actually get up and make some tea while my CD32 was calculating the AI turns :D

Too bad SX32 is so rare and thus ultra-expensive when it turns up on ebay...

The master list is out of date but maybe some of the more recent posts have what you are looking for.

actually, the cd32 was a success in england, was quite sold in europe, but the release was forbidden in the US at the last moment for some copyright reasons, which is one of the reason of the bankrupcy of commodore in 1994.
Intrinsic: try CU Amiga (Jun 93), im not sure if it has a cover cd, its hard too see. also if you ahve Amiga Computing 66 (Nov 93), it may be there.
