microsoft Imagine Cup 2004 anybody?

if anti-microsoftness is oldskool, oldskool is gay
Couldn't have said it better myself: We are gay, free and happy.
YOUR ALL FUCKING AROGANT JERKS I NOW EVERYTHING YOU DONT GET CLUE LOLZ
free to spend your nights understanding a system from the seventies.
free to search incomplete/nonexistant docs for incomplete/nonworking software.
free to fight with all these drivers problems like installing the latest "userfriendly" distro and not get any sound TODAY...
free to fight with endless text config files,
free to ask support and to get answered "if you want a gui tool youre only good to use windows" and if you use windows you are an idiot
free to pay your freetime to solve your problem alone because you get answers like that
free to feel leet and to feel strong and to hate something powerful
free to try and hide your jealousy for successful companies
free to spit on all the engineers and programmers and people and work of a company at the same time without
being able to produce something better, without knowing them, without being able to back your flaming, and still sometimes actually USING that system too
free to use guis that have always been painfully fuckin slow and that seem to be going to be slow til the end of time
and free to still feel happy that way

If you can't be free, gay and happy, it's your problem, not mine. Looks like that linux geek was right when he told you that you deserve windows.
you just proved that you react like him, and you only contribute to making me think that the majority of linux zealots are like that. if its not the case, you dont serve them by giving that image.
bye

Quoting JMZ (of XEmacs/Netscape/Mozilla fame), "Linux is free as long as your time is worth nothing." He's been flamed for this, but it seems that linux cannot convince him otherwise after several years.
Well, let me give you some advice.
You like microsoft. You know why? Because you pay them so that they give you some form of service. If they fail in some way to service you, you can shout at them and hope that they deliver.
You hate linux. You know why? Because linux is not a company. It's just a group of guys who like sharing code, ideas and opinions. And in order to be in that group, you have to be polite and willing to share and work together with others. Obviously you think that sort of thing is too complicated, not worth the time and effort, and you'd rather pay some company to solve all your problems.
And that's why you deserve windows. Don't feel bad about it.It's like trusting your car to a mechanic instead of fixing it yourself with the help of your friend. Everybody does it. And it's fine too, as long as the mechanic does his job well and your car is always running.

Coincidentaly, my car is running a whole lot better since I started fixing it my self. How about yours?
holy wars are so 1200-s :)
i dont have a driving licence yet
i m very interested in technology and even in mechanics (i played with legos for quite long, maybe longer than many ppl) but i m currently not interested at all in car technicals, nor in cars in general.
one have to choose his centers of interests, since sadly one cannot know everything bout everything.
i really like to understand how things work.
i love assembly language and low level coding.
not many ppl know windows internals and how they compare to linux, and how they relate to bugs, and i dont know much either, but linux isnt the magical wonder that many ppl claim, and , more, windows isnt the pile of crap many ppl claim.
besides, windows IS user friendly , without quotes, and HAS been for some time, which is not the case for linux.
unexperienced ppl cant use linux easily, and experienced ppl can get a very hard time if things dont work as they are supposed to.
its okay to spend night to fix things yourself, or write some free software alone and hope it ll be useful, but only if you do it for fun, or if your time is worth nothing. i like to understand how things work and to do things myself too, but when it comes to having an OS that works, sometimes i like to have it working right now.
and from the moment you are in the industrial world, i bet theres no more "well its free and it works as long as you spend two man-months learning it and configuring it": its not free anymore then .
and theres no "sharing everything with the others" aswell in that case.
work, in soft dev like anywhere else, is money. youre allowed to work for free if you want, but then find another way to eat, and dont blame others to work for getting paid. thats just how it works, in my humble opinion.
sorry if i was a bit rude.
have a nice day or night.

"Well it costs a fortune or two, it doesn't work out of the box although our brochures keep repeating that magic phrase over and over again but it is possible to be made barely working by configuring it for about two man months (more if novice). The configuration details can usually be grokked from our gigantic bug-database if you have paid for support. Just don't even think about googling for them. Also, you can probably make it work in a single processor machine with 2 gigabytes of memory for development purposes, but this is not a supported configuration and it's tad slow."
No, I'm not talking about Windows;) Welcome to business world though.

Heh... The first OS I ever used was CP/M.
And Windows is bloated shit. Even the C64 can do a better GUI based OS.

Even me cannot find something more weird to say
it seems to me that people are even more stupid than i thought before :)

...
You hate linux. You know why?
we _dont_ like microsoft, and we _dont_ pay shit to them; BUT we _do_ hate linux, because linux is simply crap and linux people are fuckin' arrogant.
windows is a much more beautiful and attractive piece of shit than linux is, that's the fact.
(just to understand: some years ago i was the most anti-windows guy you could find around here - but hey, there's no better choice at the moment)
FooLman: point :) [sot, fel hangszoro :))]

I never had time to put Linux. I ask distributions from friends and I still haven't used them. Perhaps I will do it one day. But why? Because of the big fuzz behind Linux??? I think that was the reason :P
Otherwise I am fine with windows and I can't share my time to use Linux. I also don't know what can I do with it. Running some demos/programms that won't run under Windows? Now that Dose 2 has been converted to win32, I lost one more reason to boot Linux. Programming for Linux? I am usually unmotivated to be active enough at coding in general. Perhaps I could join the Linux scene, test diferrent distributions, code some drivers for some obscure piece of hardware and anything else that the community misses. That's what I could do with Linux. But I don't even find enough motivation and time to be active in the demoscene community. I think I will continue what I am doing, but no time for Linux or anything else..
I never really hated Linux or Linux freaks in some short of kind,. but probably I was mostly annoyed when there is a lot of noise behind anything, becomes a trend, suddenly you hear everybody talking about Linux etc. Perhaps because I am feeling a bit out concerning Linux. I am not sure. Nevertheless, that's why I let loose a smile upon my face, every time I heard some news that is a breeze for anti-Linux people, however I know that these people like me just never had the time to play with Linux as Linux freak do and they are in a strange way annoyed by all that fuzz and how 1337 Linux freaks feel. I know the feeling..
Otherwise, I can just stay in my 8bit world and there is an impressive demoscene for me anyways. I could never find serenity in the PCs. Fights, fights and again fights, slow, ugly, stupid computers. The best times for me was at the CPC only meeting 2. Beware of an upcoming CPC world domination at BP!!!
p.s. "Linux is free as long as your time is worth nothing.". Hey,. I liked that quote!
i like it too.

i am not very skilled in linux, but i dont think its leet in the way you mean. its surely a great amount of skill one can acquire, but as far as i m concerned (fun) skill is not related to an os , rather to an architecture. also there are ppl who DO know unix/linux VERY WELL and who also do know windows very well and who dont say linux is not that great at all.
...so...
everyone should make his mind himself

helloworld:but still, i dont say that. linux is just gay and just sucks, but i still am able to change my mind if things change. not like you
Whoops.. my message wasn't intedned to offend anybody.. if it has: sorry for that.. in fact, my client at home is windows.. how else should I run the demos then..
And, well.. you know, sometimes I have an opinion and I know it's too black white because I know that the world is not just black-white.. and then I am searching for arguments against my black-white-thing but don't find any.. Is it just me or.. I mean.. is that somewhat common? So that's my position now..
Helloworld: Have you studied at university or something? I mean, I have (not to boast me..!) but there unix was promoted and well.. probably I have been brainwashed there.. I mean with all that beautiful right managements and stuff.. I just love it..
And well.. the best german computer magazine (CT) and best german computer news site (www.heise.de) are both pro-linux/anti-microsoft.. so well.. it's like reading all those stars-newspapers and ending up wanting to be a star.. :-)
wow... I havn't heard those discussions since the mac-pc debates we had.. hope you guys don't take it TOO serious because imho it's not really worth it..
i always find that the phrase "whatever works", well, works.
as a desktop-os, linux doesn't work for me, at all, and therefore i don't use it. sure, pack it away on a dusty old server somewhere and after digging throught tons of configfile it does the job (well, except that you have to know someone with seriously intimate linux-knowledge to make it a safe server, since there are securityholes a plenty and you don't want to be haxx0red, now do you?).
to me, the problem with linux is what people like about it; choices - there are too many. the os feels seriously bloated, and coming from a windows-person, that's saying something. :) call me oldfashioned, but a os should just -work-, you shouldn't have to tinker with it endlessly, every day, to make it run.
the whole point of having a computer is running programs, not an os.

gloom: that's right...
finally someone bringing real arguments.. :-)
I think too that windows is better than linux when it comes to layout, starting programs, installing them, etc.. I mean all the Office things..
On the other hand what I like about linux is that when it comes to find files, open ssh connections or I mean wget or scp or whatever.. as soon as I don't just work on my computer I have an advantage on linux. Now I guess it depends on what you are working.
I work in an internet company. We have web servers, networks, we watch over networks and have to react if something goes wrong. And I bet this is far more easy with linux than with windows.
About that common argument about configuring until midnight and longer:
Linux comes as SuSe or whatever and you can install it and it works.
Then IF you want to have more installed like firewall or whatever then ok, then it takes a lot of time and you really have to learn how it works. But imho this is a good approach because in windows, you don't have to know how things work but in the end, SOME error occurrs and then you don't know anything whats behind. I mean in linux I really see what happens (like in DOS, remember..? :-) and that gives me something..
What I think it's the biggest flaw in windows is it's instability. I don't know how it is in modern OSs (that means XP and such), but my brother works in a company with only windows computers.
He often says that they have to format a computer and reinstall windows after a year or so because it get's more and more instabil when you install programs and such.
I mean that is somewhat really strange. Also setting up windows.. I mean I spent days and nights until I had a working windows as I wanted.. you know, rebooting after a mini-x-y-setting all the time.. that bothers a lot.. :-)
And finally: I think the thing that a lot of companies now consider to switch to linux has the following cause: If you run a company with MS-products all over, then, you suddenly get an email with a doc with the newest word-format. Then you have to buy a new MSWord because you have to.. but the new MSWord needs a new OS so you have to buy XP or so.. and then you have a problem in the network because when you mix the network with different client PCs: When you login (I mean that server-login-thingie, dunno how it is named) another PC which has the old OS you destroy your account because the accounts are not backwards compatible as well, so the whole company has to buy XP and then ProgramXY doesn't work anymore.. I think you know what I mean. And I think this is not possible..! This is just Moneymaking.
I mean it's a different thing if you copy products for nothing - I mean I am against that but you can do that - because then you get that for nothing but in a company..
