x keeps crashing and restarting and I can't do anything. Should I install XP? Is there some keyboard shortcuts I should try? I've tried a few combinations.
ctrl-alt-f1 or alt-f1 (also f2 f3 ...) or something like that should get you a textmode (tty) terminal. and from then, i wish you good luck :)
what blala said, then run x-config or some variant of "x" and "config" (there's a good chance there will be a few, i've no idea what the difference is). If you're lucky, that'll fix it. If not, install xp ;)
I know what to do once I get a terminal. But those F1...F6 don't seem to work on this lame distro.
boot into single-user mode and fix things.
And by fix things, he means "rm -rf /"
LiveCD motherfucker, do you SPEAK it?
I tried every key combinations that made sense. I think LiraNuna won.
Some more combinations to try: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
XP. Or Vista. Or Win 7.
Damn, I'm tired. Just don't click the link.. :p
was it ctrl alt backspace to kill x11?
Also you could try lowering your graphic mode by some command (ctrl alt - or something) ..
But yes I would recommend Windows XP Pro.

ctrl alt backspace restarts X11, it doesn't kill it. The sysrq shortcuts also didn't work. It seems I really have to boot some live distro to fix it.
It kills X, but it seems he has gdm or something installed that respawns the server. Stopping the server from console would do the trick, but with X constantly restarting it might prove difficult. I'd go with single-user mode (add "single" to boot params in GRUB/LILO).
install XP
What Marq said
boot from livecd.
mount harddisc.
edit x11 config file.
eject livecd.
reboot.

reboot.
curse loudly.
repeat.
repeat.
forget xp or any other commercial oses. linux is free and rules ;)
as the above example shows yes :)
You get what you pay for.
I don't need to compare / decide between Windows & Linux anymore. I just bought a new PC. I installed XP 32 bit and Vista 64 bit on it. I'll install Windows 7 as well soon. Old PC is reserved for Linux only. No more A beats B discussions. Use both of them. Love both of them. Get pissed off by both of them. :)
xp = eXplore Pain.
vista = Very Intuitive System To Aliens.
win7 = Wrong Is Natural, v7.

lets see, ctrl + alt + f8 will take you to the shell.
Use alt + f1, f2, f3, f4 to switch between terminals.
Login and edit your /etc/x11/xorg.conf or run lets see, "xorg-configure"
You can also try to run the nvidia or ati installers, they give you the option to create a new xorg.conf file.
And these installers dont need X to run(which makes sense)
