i can promise a diskmag article that will analyze this problem-field from a more sophisticated standpoint.
I raise the ante with an article that will ridicule your standpoint without lowering myself to your ranting standards.
deadline for next pain is february 8th.

shifter, well, if my last pain article about the future of diskmags was "ranting", well okay, then it's "ranting" for you and i dont care.
not really a comment about software piracy but about a kind of piracy that most people don't consider piracy at all; music. i am a musician and since i'm not a girl with huge boobs and a tight ass i try to make a couple of bucks in the -niche- markets instead of yelling into an autotuner and bouncing around on MTV. people can say what the hell they want but the sad fact still remains; people growing up in the "internet age" doesn't see anything wrong in just downloading music and movies from the net - hell, they are even seen as "abnormal" and "not hip and happening" if they don't.
this is fucked up.
what people don't seem to see is that if nobody pays for the results of creative work, the people who make the things that you like to listen to or watch go broke and hence; no more good entertainment for you.
ignorance is fucking bliss for the idiots.
rant rant rant. :)

Actually people do buy less music. Walk into a record store and you'll notice that many of the cd shelves have been replaced by DVD shells. The music industry is not losing money to Kazaa, they're loosing money to the movie industry. And rightfully so, why would one buy an overpriced audio cd if you can get a cool movie with lot's of extras for almost the same price?

So basically the record industry's shitty state has nothing to do at all with the popularity of Kazaa et al., it's just that people just *buy less music*.

Oh, they don't. The musicians do. And it's not totally Kazaa's fault. The music industry is about everything but music, and we all know that.

Then please explain how more than 15 years of free trackermusic which often is better than the crap you hear on MTV nowadays fits into your entertainment-less world.
IMHO only "big" musicians suffer from Kazaa et. all, and those are rich already anyhow so why worry about them? Smaller musicians can benefit from Kazaa because it gives them free worldwide promotion while bypassing greedy record companies.
don't you people have anything better to spend your sparetime at? this discussion is just getting silly.
I just found recently that my first commercial game is in warez distribution. I think it's kinda cool :)
well, maybe this discussion is silly, but the subject is quite important, imho...
music industry and file sharing is a good platform to understand what's happening, i think. music industry is probably losing big amount of money - but they can blame only themselves... i can't do but repeat: in my country average price of cds is about 20 euros, average monthly earning after taxes is about 400 euros. wonder people buy less cds?
in fact, the intersection of the two sets people buying most cds and people downloading most music is quite big (not a surprise though: both consists people loving music...)
[and then we are still not speaking about that music industry mostly releases crap... :(]
so, my little advice to RIAA and all others: divide the prices by two, and multiply the sales by four...

sparcus: you are of course aware that you countradict yourself with that last statement? small artists suffer because they do not collect their income from MTV-appearances, radio and other royalties. they can "take" some of the impact of lesser CD-sales, but smaller artists cannot, since this is their primary source of income. and; the "free promotion"-bullshit is something i am afraid has been forced down your throat by people who have no real idea about how the music-industry works. take me for example; i lost a somewhat major record-deal (actually publishing-deal, but let's keep it on a novice-level here) because many of my songs were already spread on the net and via many p2p-networks. this is how they think: "what? the shit is already out there? 50% of the album-material released? fuck this, i'm going home".
..and that riddicious comment about "why trackermusic, being of such high quality compared to popular music, doesn't go on strike because of filesharing" is just downright lame. tracker-musicians don't care about cash, that's why they are trackers. those of them who -do- care about cash make "niche"-music that doesn't get on mtv. it's the same with 99% of all garage-bands around the world also - sure, they may be good, but to make it you gotta have 5% of that "extra stuff" and 95% dumb fucking luck.
blala: MY advice to RIAA (and the likes of) would be to EMBRACE digital music distribution (like itunes), because if you don't wake up and smell the coffee soon, you'll be out of business, and you're taking every struggling musician with you.

"they can "take" some..." is of course ment to reflect on the "big artists". (oh, and it's "contradict", not "countradict" .. so there :)
What`s wrong with big boobs? I don`t listen to music, i watch music :)
gloom: i won't be really sad if some big company from music industry is out of business :)
and, ok, i'm really far from being an expert on the subject, but i don't understand what struggling musicians has to do with the RIAA-type music industry - i think it's probably better for all of us (ok, maybe expect the struggling musicians themselves; but that's still only from viewpoint of cash) if industry has nothing to do with these 'small' bands.
i don't respect the 'big industry' at all; and i fear something will be go finally wrong if they "embrace" the currently 'independent' music... (which probably won't happen, anyway)
i'm happy to buy the cd-s of the bands i like, but i would be very unhappy if 90% of the price would go to the RIAA or something like that (btw, here, like in Spain, we have to pay taxes after writable cd-s; and guess where the money goes...)

Right. And what's the consequence? Give up the old-fashioned way of content distribution and establish some good commercial d/l services for music, e-books and movies. It took years for the content industries to get that fundamental paradigm shift. They rather liked to invest their money to fight for their obsolete media distribution structures.

and what the hell do *you* know about my record/mp3 collection, hm? :)
but indeed, dear people, for PS there is only one correct: *his* one :) - perhaps a day will come for you when you'll realize that people are slightly more complex than your endless intellectual ego, raised from the ruins that years of being misunderstood in all your brilliance have caused (that's about as badly supported as your own "arguments"), allows them to be.

so what's the problem, sad because you still can't code and the neighbours won't listen to your interpretation of 'music'? :)

plek: that flame coming from you hurts me as much as a fresh northern breeze coming on a hot summer night mate. the fact that you admit that you dont get any of what i do or say only proves my point that you have no open mindedness to backup your talks and enjoy locking yourself within the same hole you falsely and erronerously seem to enjoy boxing me in: closeminded and forever looking at your own shoes as the best thing to walk on in this universe.
AND FURTHER MORE MISSY! ATLEAST I DONT TAKE HUGE AMOUNTS OF SCREEN SPACE TO REPLY TO A QUOTE FORM SOMEONE!
