I dunno exactly but I have some private conclusions.
Polish scene was rather hermetic one. Because of economical situation guys could not afford a personal computer. it was a very small scene (mostly 8bit Atari, a little bit on C64...), and only in the early 90 it started to grow. It is the time you can not to catch up...

Well, giving Norway, Sweden, Finland, Danemark and Germany as an example... It is not, I hope, a question of language to lead a nice conversation since even a small language barriers can be overcome.

Polish scene had no (not too much) big personalities known well outside of the country. That's aslo important I suppose.

Polish country was not in the E.U. for a long time, so for many dudes it was "out of nowhere" (really..).

That's my shorts points. But surely, the subject is more vast...
Bye.

Why not join a polish party ? Maybe:

Worries, because you consider problems with conversation outside the party. (e.g. finding your way etc.)

Worries about old prejudices like your car gets stolen

The lack of cool demo releases at polish parties (if there are/were any i e.g. did miss them, except for 8-bit Atari stuff)

I don't want to insult anybody but that's just idiocy. I was born in Poland and still live there and I don't even know anyone who's car got stolen.

masterm: You are right, thats nuts, but worries are irrational.

Anyway i was just guessing what reasons are possible, its not my believes.

in the mid 90ies Poland was the biggest demoscene, atleast on Amiga.

hehe..well at some time, AZZARO was the poish scene I guess ;)
But he is a good guy. He invented the AAAAMIIIIGAAAH "thing" :D

Hope to see the polish scene come up to its gory days in the 90ies, then I think more people will come to polish parties.

just a couple of thoughts...

- i'm not very likely at all to visit a foreign party when there is no decent information about it in engrish, preferably by means of a website. if i ever visit another party like that, it'll probably be in russia (because i havent been there yet). iirc riverwash is an exception to the rule of polish parties, most of the time there is only a site in polish language, if any at all. (mainly referring to atari parties here...)
- if i know a party organiser personally, it increases my motivation to visit a party by at least a few hundred percent. i don't think i was ever approached personally by any polish party orgos besides grey/mystic bytes (and o wonder, the only polish demoparty i went to was his..). the party organiser doesn't have to be famous or anything, that's bullshit- being a famous scener says nothing about one's capability to organise a good party. being enthusiastic, openminded and helpfull is many times more important imho.
- my car never got stolen in poland (perhaps because i went by train), but the atmosphere undeniably is a bit odd at times, perhaps even frightening if you are of the easily scared type. the gang of baldheaded guys with knives who showed up in the swastika'n'celticcross-graffiti-plastered primary school yard in the gdansk suburb where sillyventure was organised turned out to be rather decent folk with whom we even shared a couple of beers, but i gotta admit they scared me shitless when i first spotted them... and this is certainly not the only case like this (f.e. dutch and german sceners @ orneta who got fruit(!) thrown at them by locals...)
- weather in poland is just as bad as it is over here- you can't do anything about that, but the real party is outside, and preferably in the sun instead of rain, snow or blizzard, so south european parties definitely have an advantage in this respect

just to remind you, these are just some random thoughts on the subject "why foreigners are reluctant to visit polish parties", and thus not at all representative for my overall opinion about poland and the poles- there's a lot of positive stuff to be said as well, but that is another topic ;)

I wasn't asking about 1990s. Back then, Polish parties gathered ~1000 people, mostly Amiga users. I was asking about last 3-4 years and, of course, I also had Riverwash in mind.

Every year we put up an English version of the page and every year we have Wix coming to have fun with us. This year we had two foreigners. I keep wondering why. Maybe we're doing something wrong? I've been to 4 BPs so far and two times at Function. Polish sceners have been visiting foreign parties for many years, like since MS2k1 or even before.

As of cars being stolen... That's funny when I recall 9 cars being robbed this year at BP. I was quite worried about a hired car we had there. Of course, organizers can't really do anything about it other than what they did and it was nice. Anyway, a guarded car park costs about 5 euros/24h in bigger cities here. That cliche with stealing cars doesn't upset me, I think it rather funny to see that people keep repeating the same old stories. And it shows that you don't know much about reality here :-).
The same with language. Have you had any trouble speaking to any Polish scener at any party? I think that probability of being understood in English here is similar to, say, Germany. And definitely higher than in Hungary :-).

Anyway, we've just booked the place for Riverwash next summer, 4-6.09 that is and it's Warsaw, our capital, which should be most convenient for foreigners. We did have it in mind when choosing the location and we hope to see some people coming. That's why I asked this question.

Gargaj, if you don't come to Riverwash next year, we'll not come to Function, even though we like it a lot! Yes, that's blackmail!

I allways wanted to go to a polish party, since knowing several polish sceners thru swapping in the 90ies. And seeing you are having riverwash in Warsaw next year I see it being more likely that non-poles will visit.
Hasn't Riverwash been held in rather remote places untill now? I was planning on going this year, but it seemed really hard getting to the party place. Wasnt it out in the woods somewhere at this summer resort kinda place? (Or am I confusing it with some other party?)

Language wise, yeah Germany aint any better. Seems most people over 35 in germany dont know any english. Not that the other "big" european countries are any better. France,Italy,Spain....you all suck at engrish ;)

Its true, in germany it can be difficult to speak english. but i doubt its much better with younger folks.

I would like to visit warsaw, thorn and danzig once. When they stop stealing that is.

Ok, real reason is this:

40:1

There is no chance in reaching that ratio.

This year I was really interested going to Riverwash as it was located in such a nice area near the Tatra mountains, but didn't make it in the end, mostly because I recognized I would know exactly nobody there. Before I was twice at a Polish party, in 98 and in 2000.. being one of the guys having the luck to be confronted with policeman ripping me off, hooligans who wanted to bash us up and who also - as havoc mentioned, threw fruits right along with other weird things happening, I have to admit that I wasn't really keen on going there again. The parties and the people themselves where good / great to meet anyway.

This years holiday trip however clearly showed me, that Poland is a great country to visit nowadays. Also you can have Lech and Nalizneki which is great :)

Damn, I had just chosen those dates for Black Birdie... Well, it'
s not like we'll have any problems changing the date and keeping the location.
Might even bring the family this time.

Btwn, whats up with not going to a party alone! Damn, I've spent quite a few nights somewhere in the polish countryside trying to force drunken people to speak english.

@tft: you're right, a remote woody place, 60 km from the nearest airport :-)

@wix: you forgot two most fundamental reasons to come: cheap nappies and unforgettable garlic infusion liquor! if you can move BB a bit, we'd be happy. our date is set.

The idea about being affraid of having a car being stolen is silly and is a 'good' excuse knowing that it could happen everywhere. Poland is not the same country it was even 10 ago (afaIr). Lock your car, hide your hi-fi like (almost) everywhere, so you gonna risk nothing.

Ppl are not going to PL, because of sth like "I heard that Poland is far away with no infrastructure" heard from a friend or red somwhere in the press. As far as the first reason is partially true, the second is a simple proof of being lazy... or affraid a li'l bit?

I know some baldheaded dudes are not too nice to confront, but well, personally I had the same almost "close encounter of the 3rd kind" in Germany. You may have it everywhere...

I had that great oppurtunity to participate in those Amiga parties back than. We had fun than... But dunno how it is nowadays. Surely polish folx speak a WAY better English now than back than.

The reaon for a lack of visitors is, imo lack of good productions, I mean gfx, music and demos done for diferent platforms such as C=64, Amiga, Atari (well, here the scene is strong). ZX has its cosy small vodka meetings around Krakow organized by Yerzmyey + Co but there is no good multiplatform party I presume.

Sorry, if I offend sb, but it is how do I see it.
And it's ages since I have not been to the party.

Hey people,

It's nice to find this thread on Pouet! I was a French scener and used to be part of Revelation, a French/Polish demogroup. Some of our Polish members were also part of FUSE, a group I enjoyed the productions and style very much. At the time I used to be on #polishscene from time to time, to keep in touch with the people from these groups, and was also more or less involved with a Polish artgroup called The Loop submitting some guest logos from time to time.

Nowadays I live in Poland, and although I consider myself as retired from the scene, I have been looking for Polish demoscene presence on the Internet. Unfortunately it seems that since the year 2000, strangely, there are not really any parties anymore in Poland. I found out actually about the RiverWash party and would be interested in attending the next edition! Are there still any active Polish sceners around from the period 1997-1999?

Next edition od all mentioned demoparties are planned for this year, Riverwash 3 wil lbe held between 4th and 6th of September in Warsaw. And also there are plans for next two amiscene meetings and maybe some demoshows for not sceners.
