What soundcard?

category: general [glöplog]
Hi,

I was just wondering if there are any cheap-ass soundcards that have low-latency ASIO drivers. Although my current soundcard is cheap-ass (it's an ancient SB PCI128) the ASIO latency is about 46ms which is pretty damn annoying.

I looked at the KX Driver stuff, which seems nice and low-latency, but I'd have to get a SBLive! for that. Are they any good? Or should I get another brand? Help. :)

<Insert vaguely tangential demoscene-excuse here>

You get a used SBlive for almost nothing, And then you can enjoy the mega-soundfonts. ;) I have quite a collection of them. That is, both of Live!s and of good Soundfonts.

I had not tried KX drrivers so far. I try and tell you. I hear kb/fr is really satisfied with them.

As i could see from the screenshots, you can misuse Sblive for a lot of cool stuff with them too!

Well, basically I just want to be able to use VST-plugins that actually respond to what I'm playing, instead of hearing a noise (quite possibly *beep*beep*) 50ms after I played said note.

I bought a SBLive Audigy II (bulk) for 80 euros and the quality is very good :)

I'd go for Hoontech DSP24 Audio Value: http://www.staudio.com/products/dsp24ve/info.html

Dunno if that's cheap-ass enough for you :)

nuff said.

Works as good as the half-finished incarnation of this that I wrote myself, which means: <3ms latency with my notebook AC97 crap.

Asio4all solved my woes :)

kb, you truly are a king among kings.
Or actually, Michael Tippach is, but still. You know. Demi-King.

Got a DSP24 Value. Very cool for everything from msdos (cheap-ass AC97 is in da house for nostalgic users...) to hardcore music pro software.

Whole sound quality just eats anything soundblastering around.

it seems the "new driver to come which is so waited for yesterday" is more improved and offer a even better sound quality according to silly users who attempted the beta installation facing a major OS crash.

the chip is the same than in the well known Audiophile 24/96 by Midiman and the sound quality nearly the same for a cheaper price.

Luv her!

i've got the audiophile 2496, it's great and fairly cheap. at least compared to e.g. the delta-66.

i have an DS-XG aswell. The response from software synths equals that of my hardware setup, except the soundquality isnt really good enough for anything but hobby work. (belive me, get a pair of good speakers and most "modern" soundcards sound like a beeswarm, no matter how much bloody insulation you use on the wires arrrghh....)

audigy is good enugh and cheap-ass also... i mean, sure, you can use kx on an sblive, but you only get 44k/16bit... with audigy you get the same latency (5ms-10ms) AND you get the VSTis/VSTfx to generate/process 24bit data. Audigy2 _seems_ to be able to actually record at 24bit, something the first version coudln't do (just 24bit playback). But ADC sure is pure crap and probably isn't worth the extra cash... so if you keep it inside the computer a plain audigy1 could just be it.

Another "cheap ass" option is the M-Audio Revolution 7.1... true 192khz 24-bit. Same chip as the Audiophile, 'cept much cheaper. Very low latency too. However, beware that there's no gameport (i.e. midi-in)... I keep my old sb-live around just as a midi-in device :)

You _could_ get an Audigy 2 (not audigy 1!) which is generally more expensive than the M-Audio Rev.7.1, but you must follow exactly these instructions to get it working in real 96khz 24-bit. Otherwise it'll resample everything to 48khz all ac97 style, which just makes the sound ugly (b/c of their low-quality resampling algorithm).

what about sound quality? What do I have to go for if I want good quality, low noise, etc..?
I mean, a good D/A wandler isn't for free..??
I've got a "pretty" good amp and speakers but I think my soundcard is the weak link..

phred. Unless you use insulated gold wires, the cables are just as weak a link in a setup.

You may have the best audio equipment in the world. But if you decided to spare those 100$ some proper wireing cost (atleast), it doesnt matter how many bells and whistles the rest of the setup has.

Unless you get one of those fully digital monitors and go all the way to a full digital path.

added on the 2004-01-14 14:37:06 by sagacity sagacity
Lol! I couldn't find the english word but wrote the greek because I didn't cared..

I still can't find it,. it means I waited without needing to wait. Because the guy told me that he send it to me just yesterday..

Jaba is like free in Greece. I bought this thing jaba. But it also like a waste of time free.. Uhm... perhaps the others greeks can explain. I am too tired and want to go home now ;)
