The origin of chip music composing ?
category: general [glöplog]
ulrick - I think havoc just slightly misunderstood what I said. I was talking about how a lot of people today are are talking about music made with 80's/early-90's home computer and videogame systems as if some new wave of ingenious luminaries have rediscovered it after it died out and was forgotten (though of course, as we know, it never did die out).
You know the sort of thing, I'm sure - people calling themselves 8-bit artists who give interviews to trendy bibles of urban cool and ostentatious Web2.0 style-hubs saying stuff like "yeah, it's like, I make music, right, with discarded toys from the 80's? Yah? I'm, like, an electronica punk oldschool 8-bit bleepcore genius". Then everyone sucks their cocks for a few years before forgetting about them. (Good news for me though, since I've just done two UK live tours and I'm about to play in New York...then the bubble will burst and I'll be back in my bedroom tapping on my Amiga, writing tunes that few people will ever hear - just the way I like it!)
Back on topic - I also talked about some late-80's Amiga musicians having coined the phrase 'chiptune' to refer to sample-based Amiga modules which in turn were stylistically reminiscent of early-80's SID-like sounds. I wasn't saying anyone rediscovered the terminology, although some of the afore-mentioned present-day musicians call their style 'chiptune', which is a bit misleading.
But that's a semantic, linguistic argument that probably nobody but me cares about, which is fair enough :D

Out of interest, Anders (Goto80) places 4-Mat, Turtle and Duz as composing the first bleepy chip-style sampletracked modules in 1989. I forget which mods, but they're out there.
...I care because you do.
Umm, I meant to say I haven't found myself bothered by people calling various different things chiptunes. On the other hand somebody stating that one track is a chiptune because a Gameboy is playing it and another one is not because it was made with just a sample tracker, is pretty annoying.

I meant to say I haven't found myself bothered by people calling various different things diesel cars. On the other hand somebody stating that one car is a diesel car because it generates energy by burning a mixture of hydrocarbons and another one is not because it just burns alkanes, is pretty annoying.
well perhaps chiptune is only a music coming out of a chipset..
so it has been invented with the first music chipset no ?
-_-)° boring thread...

@havoc: ?, That allegory was lost with me. Did you intend to comment what I said or does it carry the same idea?
chiptune and demoscene vs. electro in detroit ... it never went away :D
So basically, you tell me the exact datetime, the exact location and I take care of the guy who invented it all. It's going to work well don't worry.
So, purist may now distinct chip music and chiplike music...
But what is certain is that it must sound totally blippy.
So, some arpegios or a game boy lead in an electro tune is not a chiptune at all!

omg, timba stole my headphones.
Virgill: nigga stole your headphones?
Yeah, he's finished ripping our music.
Now he targets our gear.
Next phase: our girlfriends.
OUTRAGE!
(Although, I'm sure some of you will think "Hell, yeah! He can have mine!". And now you're wondering: "Did Nutman mean our gear or our girlfriends?". Seriously, get a life.)

I think the definition "chiptune is only a music coming out of a chipset" fails when you consider "chiptunes" like this
nobody ever claimed you cannot use one to emulate the other ;)
Okay guys, thanks for all you replies in this topic. The conclusion is a mix of doh & peskypeter's ideas:
- a music coming out of a chipset or emulated chipset;
- the tune must have lot of blipblips and effects on the notes (porta, vibra, tremo, ...);
- no style imposed apart from feat. of Rick Astley ;).

why is this being discused for the 150329585 time? I thought the things were really really clear by now.
Chiptunes are chipmusic made in soundtrackers. Chipmusic is chipmusic made in chiptrackers, 8bit is a term made by wankers in wankertrackers.

and the first time I heard the term chiptune was when I listend to the song chiptune by nuke / anarchy.
A chiptune is not a chipmusic.
A chipmusic:
- is a music coming out of a chipset;
- must have lot of blipblips and effects on the notes (glissando, vibrato, ...);
- is made in a chiptracker;
- can be dated back to all tunes made in 8bit machines or less.
A chiptune:
- is a music coming out of an emulated chipset;
- must have lot of blipblips and effects on the notes (glissando, vibrato, ...);
- is made in a tracker like Soundtracker, Renoise;
- can be dated back to the song of nuke / anarchy.
I am grateful to dubmood, peskypeter and doh.
Any error is mine.

eh..
Next, can we have a formal classification of: demo, dentro, and intro. Thanks!

You're way overcomplicating it. Everything you need to know is right here.
