cool stuff!

but now i'm even more convinced "photorealism" is the wrong tag for what you're doing here

Wade : how many hours from start to end to achieve that ? That's really amazing.

Wade, I've just watched your 10mn making-of video and I'm gobsmacked, definitely. Great job!

Wade, how do you apply the colours? low brush opacity?
added on the 2008-09-12 21:56:54 by iks iks
more likely adding a layer + brushing it in that alters the hue of the greyscale shit beneath.

A logo... done in Gimp, though.

you are all going to kill me for this but somehow that girl right eye looks weird. that picture looks like ... well weird. it looks like other eye is drawn from refence picture that is took with the fisheye lens (you know it makes everything look like that it's more near) and other eye is well. it looks like bit weird. and does she have sperm or what on her lip ? or herpes ? and hair looks very lifeless :( sorry. but it's good technical achivement but it's not really interesting image, it's boring study of woman face. i like vampire version more :)

I'm pretty sure you could reproduce the face in gimp, although that would be a pita.

I for one am still using psp for all my drawing/pixeling/vector needs. It's probably the best all-in-one tool for a graphics generalist like me. Too bad the recent corel versions (11 and 12) tend to suck and I have little hope for the future.

I thought of Juliet Landau the second I saw that picture. Was sure she was used as a reference until I looked at all them photos @ devianart. She actually looks like she's behind a fisheye-lens most the time...

Thanks for the kind comments and the constructive criticism too. I'm the first to say it's not the most creative motif, but that's the nature of portraits I guess. Plus the main idea is to demonstrate technical aspect of painting for a tutorial.

And unlike most of my previous work, I actually had permission to use my sources this time.

Keops: It took about 18 hours in total, spread over several days, but I am quite a slow painter anyway.

Irokos: I apply colour by adding a layer set to "color" mode, which allows you to paint directly over it. But you have to mix various colours together or it will just end up looking monochrome. I find it easier to work in grayscale to begin with so I can focus on getting the values right first of all.
